About the role:

We are looking for a collaborative and experienced team member to join our business as Principal Advisor, IS&T Business Partnering. Reporting to the Business Partner IS&T – People, Services & Social License, this role brings a unique combination of business and technology expertise to support our Rio Tinto Iron Ore customers in achieving their objectives.

The Principal Advisor (PA) works side-by-side with senior leaders (general managers and their teams) in the Iron Ore business across a subset of several divisions, namely Process Engineering & Major Hazards, Mine Technical Services, HS&E, Facilities, Operations Centre, Finance and Human Resources. The PA understands the divisions’ businesses and uses their knowledge of IS&T capabilities and technology to pro-actively unpack opportunities to deliver business value. They act as the interface between Iron Ore and IS&T as a translator and integrator.

This is a customer-centric role that requires excellent communication and stakeholder engagement at all levels in the organisation, a strong understanding of the Iron Ore business and the ability to operate across a large geographical area. Though this role does not have line leadership accountabilities, the successful candidate must be a mentor and coach to senior advisors and other IS&T team members. They will be expected to competently provide technical and non-technical advice, and by demonstrating great facilitation skills, must be able to shape and coordinate the efforts of resources at various levels inside and outside of IS&T.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be committed to the safety of yourself and the team and lead by example with an ever-present growth mindset.
  • Integrate into the allocated Iron Ore divisions as a trusted partner to understand their business strategy, problems and opportunities and provide guidance and innovative solutions.
  • Be the IS&T liaison and lead for the development and implementation of technology roadmaps and be accountable for solution delivery for the associated Iron Ore divisions.
  • Work collaboratively with the IS&T Project Delivery team to provide sustainable solutions per customer requirements.
  • Promote and drive value extraction from the technology currently being used and champion the evaluation and use of new technology in collaboration with global counterparts in IS&T.

What you’ll bring:

  • A growth mindset and strong sense of customer-focus, process simplification, and continuous improvement.
  • Excellent collaboration, influencing and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to work across various regions, cultures, and time zones.
  • Influence outside of line leadership
  • Problem solving and facilitating
  • Demonstrated passionate and inclusive leadership capabilities and a history of fostering positive culture and developing people.
  • Possess a solid understanding of the Rio Tinto business and be able to articulate the opportunities throughout the Iron Ore value chain.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • A strong safety focus, a commitment to your own safety and to those around you
  • A tertiary qualification in engineering, finance, technology or similar discipline
  • The ability to build, influence and maintain key relationships with a diverse range of peers, wider team members and stakeholders – this role is less about your IS&T skillset (you have a broad team of talented individuals with that skillset) and more about your relationship and communications competency and performance-based abilities
  • The capability to critically analyse data and make effective strategic and operational decisions based on information provided and drive issues to resolution
  • A competent and visible leadership style of guiding, mentoring, developing and empowering team members resulting in positive employee engagement

Where you will be working

This role is based in Perth, Western Australia, out of our Central Park office, working Monday – Friday, with ad hoc and regular travel to sites in the Pilbara.
