About the role 

We have an exciting opportunity for an Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander leader to join our team as Principal Advisor Aboriginal Training & Liaison (ATAL). This role manages strategic outcomes and delivery of the ATAL program, which is a key pillar of Rio Tinto Iron Ore's Indigenous Participation Strategy. The strategy is designed to create opportunities and remove barriers to employment for indigenous peoples.

We strongly encourage leaders from Traditional Owner groups where Rio Tinto operates in the Pilbara - the Ngarluma, Robe River Kuruma, Yindjibarndi, Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura, Muntulgura Guruma, Banjima, Yinhawangka, Ngarlawangga, and Nyiyaparli Peoples.

This role is a great opportunity for a collaborative, creative thinking individual who is experienced in managing multiple internal and external stakeholders’ groups to support the program across our operations and in our communities. Reporting to the Manager Future Skills, your key responsibilities will include: 

  • Build and maintain strong relationships and interfaces with internal and external stakeholders and monitor for ongoing contribution to the success of the program 

  • Revise the program strategy ongoing to ensure effectiveness and positive engagement with communities 

  • Support trainers and mentors to develop and deliver bespoke training solutions for candidates; and 

  • Support trainers and mentors to deliver outcomes for candidates 

  • Partner closely with delivery partners of work ready component to ensure delivery is meeting needs of individuals and outcomes for the business 

  • Report and present on program strategy and outcomes to senior stakeholders internally and to external partners  

  • Drive outcomes for participants through effective use of internal team members and support structures 

  • Work with stakeholders to ensure program participants’ safety and wellbeing 

  • Liaise with Prescribed Body Corporates and RTIO Traditional Owner Engagement Leads to gather referrals and communicated outcomes 

  • Engage with employers both internally and externally to secure employment, work trials and work experience opportunities  

  • Liaise with other support services to ensure ‘wrap-around support’ is provided to support people achieve their vocational goals 

  • Co-ordinate participant connections to external service providers to ensure they have the best opportunity in achieving their goals 

  • Work with Traditional Owners and Pilbara Aboriginal people, incorporate their feedback into the development of successful Indigenous employment programs. 

  • Analyse and consider internal and external factors which contribute to employment and retention of Aboriginal employees 

  • Support information sessions.

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have: 

  • Strong links to culture and community with existing relationships with PBCs and regional communities 

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skill with ability to prioritise deliverables 

  • Outstanding stakeholder engagement skills across all levels of business and the community 

  • Ability to apply critical thinking to scenarios and modify the program to continuously improve 

  • Demonstrated experience implementing frameworks and strategy 

  • Demonstrated experience building and leading teams  

  • Active listening skills and cultural sensitivity  

  • Current knowledge and skills to provide career related advice or guidance to participants appropriate to the cohorts 

  • Proactive and genuine interest in empowering others, e.g.: learners with barriers.

The role is based at Central Park, Perth CBD with ad hoc travel to the Pilbara.
