About the role
The Weipa Town Authority (WTA) is seeking an experienced and motivated Accountant to join our team in one of Australia’s most unique and vibrant remote communities.

The OpportunityWeipa, a thriving coastal community nestled along the picturesque Albatross Bay on the western shores of Cape York Peninsula, in the heart of the Gulf of Carpentaria. With a population of approximately 4,200 residents, Weipa offers a vibrant and sustainable lifestyle amidst breathtaking natural surroundings.
Situated roughly 200km from Australia's northernmost tip and accessible by an 800km road journey from Cairns (or a 1.5 hour flight), Weipa may seem remote, but it boasts all the modern facilities and conveniences you would expect from a bustling town.
The Weipa Town Authority (WTA) acts as a Local Government authority in the Township of Weipa on behalf of Rio Tinto. Working a 9 Day Fortnight, the Accountant is responsible for:
- Prepare and maintain accurate financial records in accordance with relevant legislation and accounting standards
- Assist with annual budgets, long‑term financial planning, and forecasting
- Manage reconciliations, journals, and end‑of‑month processes
- Support audit processes and ensure regulatory compliance
- Prepare financial reports for management and the Authority
- Contribute to continuous improvement of financial systems and processes
- Complete oversight and ownership of Rates revenue
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- A degree in Accounting or a related discipline
- Experience in financial accounting and reporting, ideally within government or a regulated environment
- High-level computer literacy (Accounting software, Microsoft Office Suite Word / Excel)
- Well-developed time management and prioritisation skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work well in a team and autonomously
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) / Chartered Accountant (CA) or working towards
- Previous experience in Local Government
- Previous experience with the MagiQ Software suite.
