The Weipa Town Authority (WTA) is seeking an experienced and motivated Accountant to join our team in one of Australia’s most unique and vibrant remote communities.

The OpportunityWeipa, a thriving coastal community nestled along the picturesque Albatross Bay on the western shores of Cape York Peninsula, in the heart of the Gulf of Carpentaria. With a population of approximately 4,200 residents, Weipa offers a vibrant and sustainable lifestyle amidst breathtaking natural surroundings.

Situated roughly 200km from Australia's northernmost tip and accessible by an 800km road journey from Cairns (or a 1.5 hour flight), Weipa may seem remote, but it boasts all the modern facilities and conveniences you would expect from a bustling town.

The Weipa Town Authority (WTA) acts as a Local Government authority in the Township of Weipa on behalf of Rio Tinto. Working a 9 Day Fortnight, the Accountant is responsible for:

• Prepare and maintain accurate financial records in accordance with relevant legislation and accounting standards
• Assist with annual budgets, long‑term financial planning, and forecasting
• Manage reconciliations, journals, and end‑of‑month processes
• Support audit processes and ensure regulatory compliance
• Prepare financial reports for management and the Authority
• Contribute to continuous improvement of financial systems and processes
• Complete oversight and ownership of Rates revenue

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

• A degree in Accounting or a related discipline
• Experience in financial accounting and reporting, ideally within government or a regulated environment
• High-level computer literacy (Accounting software, Microsoft Office Suite Word / Excel)
• Well-developed time management and prioritisation skills
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work well in a team and autonomously

It will also be beneficial if you have:

• Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA) / Chartered Accountant (CA) or working towards

• Previous experience in Local Government
• Previous experience with the MagiQ Software suite.
