About the Role 

Join our team as a Communities & Social Performance Adviser and play a key role in supporting the delivery of strategy, policy, and standards development across a range of activities within the Communities and Social Performance (CSP) area. You will contribute to maintaining positive relationships between Rio Tinto and stakeholders while ensuring compliance with legal and company policy standards. 

In this role, you will apply your professional knowledge and expertise to advise on, implement, and deliver key CSP initiatives, systems, and programs. Additionally, you will provide valuable advice and support on significant business cases, contributing your expertise to relevant areas. Your role will also involve actively contributing to the improvement of policy, processes, or procedures, ensuring alignment with legal and company policy standards.Building and maintaining positive relationships with the surrounding community and stakeholders will be paramount, as you represent the organization at community gatherings and relevant forums. Furthermore, you will coordinate various programs or activities aimed at fostering goodwill and mutual benefit, disseminating information to the community, and gathering feedback from stakeholders as necessary.

Key responsibilities 

The Adviser Communities and Social Performance will:

  • Applies professional knowledge and expertise to advise on, implement and deliver key Communities and Social Performance initiatives, systems and/or programs.
  • Provides professional advice and support on significant business cases/deals and input into areas of technical expertise.
  • Contributes to improvements in policy, processes or procedures within a business unit.
  • Ensures compliance with legal and other commitments, and company policy and standards.
  • Develops and maintains favourable relationships with the surrounding community and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represents the organization at community gatherings and/or role-related forums.
  • Coordinates programs or activities to promote goodwill and mutual benefit, by disseminating information to the community and soliciting feedback from stakeholders where required. 

What You’ll Bring

  • Tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in social science, community development
  • Ideally 3 years of experience in CSP discipline within a relatable area, which may include stakeholder engagement, social impact, economic development, community relations, social investment or communications.
  • Demonstrable ability to influence, work collaboratively and develop positive relationships with stakeholders
  • Ability to develop and implement impactful strategies and work programs, that contribute to delivering on business priorities and long-term outcomes (i.e. Impeccable ESG and Social Licence)
  • Experience in project managing multiple projects/programmes simultaneously and working through a networked organization to achieve results
  • Experience working in regional and remote communities and/or homelands

Where you’ll be workingOur Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tons of bauxite.  

Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce—including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.  

The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape
