We are looking for a site-based Environment Advisor to join our HSE team at Rio Tinto Yarwun. In this role you will partner with our operations and stakeholders to champion environmental performance. Reporting to the Superintendent Environment, and working as part of a team of environmental professionals, you will be:
Partnering with Asset teams and stakeholders to support environmental risk management
Implementing and verifying the business’ environmental management system
Managing environmental issues, for example: fauna/flora, surface water quality, stormwater management, marine environmental management, groundwater quality, emissions to air, clearing/rehabilitation activities and hydrocarbon/contamination management, regulatory approval applications
Project managing contractors and consultants providing environmental services
Providing environmental advice in the interpretation of legislation, acts and regulations
Preparing and submitting compliance reports in association with our licence to operate
Collating data and submitting reports for internal Rio Tinto and statutory purposes
What you’ll bring
A Bachelor’s degree in an Environmental or related discipline with knowledge of key concepts theories and practices related to environmental aspects & impacts, risk management, State and Federal Legislation and environmental management systems
Knowledge of Management Systems ISO 14000:1 and the Queensland Environment regulatory framework
Relevant industry (large scale mineral processing or chemical manufacturing) or mining experience
Demonstrated experience in executing work with a strong attitude towards safety and improvement
Excellent communication and partnering skills with the ability to work independently
Resilience and a dynamic approach to problem solving

Where you’ll be working
With production beginning in 2004 at our Yarwun alumina refinery, located approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Gladstone in Central Queensland, today the operation produces more than three million tonnes of alumina per year. Thanks to its ‘Industry 4.0’ focus, Yarwun is also a leader in trialling new technologies to improve operations on site, including 3D printing, robotics and drones in confined spaces, and is home to Rio Tinto’s innovative Queensland Research and Development Centre (QRDC). Along with Boyne Smelters Limited and Queensland Alumina Limited, our Yarwun Operation supports the local community in a wide range of initiatives through Here for Gladstone.
