About the role
Iron Ore Sales & Marketing, part of RT Commercial, is responsible for the distribution and placement of more than 330 million tonnes per annum of Rio Tinto iron ore. In 2024, Iron Ore delivered >$30b in revenue for RT, and this is expected to rise as our new mine in Guinea (Simandou) comes online.
The iron ore market continues to evolve with both iron ore supply and steel mill landscape becoming more complex. The decarbonisation transition is also a key factor shaping our commercial strategies, as we partner with customers to support their decarbonisation goals. Our goal is to deliver superior margin performance through effective long term product placement and shorter-term tactical placement decisions.
We are looking for a Advisor Marketing to lead the development of commercial strategies and drive the strategic planning activities for Iron Ore Commercial. This role will be key in supporting the Iron Ore Commercial senior leadership team in strategic decision-making and value generation.
This role is a great opportunity for a driven and collaborative professional who is enthused by working with different stakeholders in crafting and driving strategies to overcome current and future business challenges. The project work is extremely diverse, with opportunity to gain exposure to a broad range of topics and senior leaders.
Working within the Marketing team and reporting to the Senior Manager - Marketing, you will,
Drive high priority strategy workstreams for the Global Iron Ore Portfolio, including Go-To-Market strategies across all Iron Ore operations within Rio Tinto (Pilbara, IOC, Simandou).
Evaluate and develop business cases to support new Commercial opportunities and initiatives supplemented by robust evaluation models (discount cash flow models).
Collaborate seamlessly across Sales & Marketing, Product Group, Economics, Communications to bring expertise to the projects and deliver as “one team”.
Develop narrative & supporting materials for high profile engagements, e.g. negotiations, Exco presentations, capital markets day.
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
Relevant Degree qualifications.
Min. 3 years of commercial experience, preferably with strategy/marketing. Nb: experience with mining is also high regarded with a strong preference for internal candidates.
Ability to understand macro-economic concepts and their impacts across a value chain.
Strong critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and understanding of strategic framework and concepts.
Ability to work in a matrix environment and build cross-functional relationships.
Strong communication / presentation skills, with experience in translating complex issues into key messages to senior management.
Ability to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, and work within deadlines.
