Our Telfer operation in HEALTH, SAFETY AND RISK is now recruiting for the position of ADVISOR – OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE

In the Great Sandy Desert in the East Pilbara region of Western Australia, our Telfer gold-copper mine is our fly-in-fly-out operation, comprising open pits, processing plant and an underground mine. While at site Telfer offers a diverse range of recreational activities including a gym, swimming pool, driving range, movie room and refurbished communal eatery.
Who we’re looking for
We are seeking an accomplished and resilient Occupational Hygienist Technician to join our Health, Safety and Risk team at our Telfer Operations in Western Australia.
The role involves working with the Senior Advisor – Occupational Hygiene in a supportive environment with great opportunities to build your skills through a truly diverse range of work and associated risks to health. This is a challenging yet rewarding opportunity will see you provide occupational hygiene advice to support and ensure the provision of a safe and healthy working environment, minimising of risk and injury to employees and equipment.
You will utilise your expertise towards the protection and promotion of workers' health, protection of the environment and contribution to a safe and sustainable workforce. The diverse operations across site and tasks of varying complexity will offer a multitude of challenges where no two days will be the same.
Key responsibilities
- Assessment (including monitoring) and management of health risks on site in accordance with the Health and Hygiene Management plan.
- Working with COH led programme, part of global OH community of practice, and teams within the site – Environmental Scientists, Ventilation Engineers, Safety Professionals, Medical
- Implementation of the site wide Respiratory Protection Plan, including respirator and hearing protection fit testing
- Assistance in the review, update and practical implementation of Management Plans – including: Hearing Conservation; Respiratory Protection; Potable Water.
- Verification of Critical Controls for site Major Hazards - Silica, DPM, Noise, Exposure to Hazardous Substances, Potable water and Thermal Extremes. Underground, Surface, Production risks.
- Assist with the management of potable water, including follow up of incident reporting.
- Monitoring of effectiveness of controls
- Use direct reading instruments, sampling techniques and other methods to measure levels of chemical, physical and biological agents such as dust, heat, noise and radiation
- Interpret the results of exposure evaluations and determine risk to human health based on scientific research and recommend ways to control workplace hazards through the hierarchy of controls.
- Undertake Investigations into root causes of monitoring results that exceed the OEL or Action Level or are otherwise of concern.
- Communications with range of site and group team at various levels within the organisation.
- Building and maintaining external networks – clients, regulatory bodies, technical experts and equipment providers
The ideal candidate will show a strong sense of initiative and be a driven self-starter. You will enjoy the autonomous nature of this role and will be encouraged to always learn and broaden your skillset. Keep in mind that meeting all the listed requirements below isn’t essential but considered desirable.
Ideal requirements include:
- Tertiary qualification in the discipline of Occupational Hygiene (or working towards)
- Knowledge and understanding of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020 and Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022
- Eligible for Mine Air Quality Officer appointment
- DMIRS-approved Noise Officer Course
- Proven experience implementing, executing, and supporting site hygiene programs
- Understanding/exposure to Occupational Hygiene practices, processes, and disciplines over a range of health risks.
- Experience and competency in Respirator Fit Testing (AIOH RespFit or equivalent)
- Provisional membership of AIOH desirable. Full membership will be highly regarded.
Please note: This is a permanent role that will work on a FIFO (8/6), flying out of Perth.
