AI Engineer

Work Location:  Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster:Monday to Friday

The AI Engineer is a team member of the AI and Machine Learning team.

The role delivers value primarily by:

  • Developing, inventing and building innovative Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning solutions for key stakeholders inside Fortescue.
  • Focusing on Fortescue’s business objectives and user requirements to make sure that software solutions are fit for purpose; and
  • Leading by example to increase awareness and understanding of how AI and ML can transform Fortescue.

Key accountabilities will include:                      

  1. BUILD: Solutions for AI/ML. Specifically:
  1. Build cutting-edge solutions and communicate the associated implications and opportunities for Fortescue.
  2. Collaboratively develop and evolve software and processes to create robust solutions.
  3. Embody AI & ML research into usable, reliable, and tested software for Fortescue.
  1. DELIVER: Support the delivery of AI & ML technology into Fortescue by:
  1. Gather user requirements and contribute to human centred design workshops.
  2. Writing comprehensive software tests, building continuous integration pipelines and providing technical support to solutions delivered by the AI & ML team
  3. Working closely with front-end tools such as streamlit to deliver interfaces that are delightful and valued by our end users.
  4. Collaborating with teams across the business to assist integration of AI & ML tools into Business As Usual (BAU) operations.
  1. PIONEER: the next wave of digital initiatives by:
  1. Performing large-scale experiments and analysis to identify hidden relationships.
  2. Influencing product teams through presentation of AI & ML based recommendations.

 Qualifications and skills required:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a quantitative discipline (Physics, machine learning, computer science, bioinformatics, statistics or related fields) or masters or PhD in physics, machine learning, computer science, bioinformatics, statistics or related fields
  • 3 years’ experience in software development with Python, including experience in writing robust, reliable software.
  • 3 years’ experience in solving business problems using statistics and machine learning. For example:
    • Applying machine learning techniques using both classical techniques such as Random Forests and modern approaches such as CNN’s and Transformers.
    • Applying machine learning to business facing time series problems and discrete optimisation challenges.
  • Excellent communication: the ability to express complex technical concepts in simple way.
  • A track record of teamwork and proven ability to work with others to achieve great outcomes.
