The Opportunity – Permanent, Full Time Position

This is an exciting opportunity to join a high performing, diverse and driven team where you as Analyst Acquisitions & Divestments (“A&D”) will be responsible for supporting the identification and analysis of new opportunities and the preparation and execution of public market and private treaty transactions. Reporting to a Manager A&D, as an Analyst you will help drive further improvements to South32’s global portfolio from here in Perth, Western Australia. This is a unique opportunity to join a highly active team, having recently executed a pipeline of transactions including acquiring a 45% interest in the Sierra Gorda copper mine in Chile.

Key role accountabilities will include:

Individual Accountabilities

  • Assisting in aspects of the analysis, preparation (both logistical and tactical) and execution of transactions including:
    • Gathering and analysing data 
    • Coordinating due diligence investigations
    • Undertaking financial modelling and valuation activities including working closely with technical experts and incorporating due diligence findings
    • Managing data rooms and related Q&A processes in divestment activities
    • Assisting with preparation of information memoranda and other marketing materials
    • Assisting with preparation of reports and presentations of a succinct and high-quality nature, to be delivered to South32 Lead Team and Director audiences
    • Work with relevant Group Functions to identify, plan for and effect the activities required to execute transactions
    • Co-ordinate and assist with necessary team / stakeholder meetings to progress the execution of transactions
    • Participate in transaction Steering Committee meetings, including the presentation of materials to Lead Team members
    • Assist with the management of external transaction advisors to meet transaction deliverables
  • Leading discrete workstreams in a transaction
  • Maintaining databases and registers to support A&D’s pursuit of opportunities
  • Staying up to date with share market and corporate activity and themes, providing ad hoc updates to your A&D and broader Corporate Development colleagues

About You

Candidates ideally have:

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • A strong team-first mentality
  • Relevant experience in either (i) the resources industry / operations, (ii) management consulting, investment banking or Big-4 advisory; or (iii) another relevant, commercial-focussed role
  • Existing work experience or completed studies in:
    • Interpretation and analysis of financial statements (P&L, Cash Flow and Balance Sheet statements)
    • Understanding of economics, corporate finance and valuation methodologies, including discounted cash flows
    • Strong analytical, modelling and research skills, including demonstrable proficiency with Microsoft Excel
    • Knowledge and understanding of diverse data sources (Bloomberg, Reuters, DataStream, CapIQ, analyst reports, company reports, etc.) and an ability to effectively coordinate and filter relevant information from those sources
  • Confidence and experience in presenting such financial and related analysis to senior Corporate Development colleagues, functional Vice Presidents, and Lead Team members

Qualifications

  • Candidates will have completed either a Bachelor’s degree or post-graduate studies in a commercial or quantitative science discipline, or received CFA Level 1 (or other relevant and industry recognised) accreditation
