Fortescue is pleased to open applications for the 2027 Mechanical Fitter - Hedland Residential Apprenticeship intake.
We are looking for motivated and mechanically minded individuals who possess a passion for learning.
This is a great opportunity to enter a highly sought after vocation, engage in training, and gain invaluable experience with a world class iron ore producer and global greens solutions business. As well as being a part of the Fortescue Family, the successful applicants will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to help them succeed and become a highly skilled and capable tradesperson.
Work Location: Fortescue’s Hedland Operations
Rosters: (8:6:7:7) OR 8D6R (8:6) Residential in Port Hedland

About the Program
- 4-year apprenticeship offered, Hedland Residential
- Formal on-the-job training provided via coordinated rotations across Hedland operations
- Formal off-the-job training through North Metro Tafe WA
- Completion of nationally recognised MEM30219 Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade
- Remuneration is above the award rate, and will reflect the working roster, work requirements, and training component of the program
About You
- Must be 18 years or older at the commencement of the apprenticeship program (early Feb 2027)
- Hold a full valid Australian drivers licence
- Must have a passion for mechanical type work and problem solving
- Comfortable working in a physical and challenging environment
- The ability to work long hours, including night shift on coordinated roster rotations
- Completion of a Pre-Apprenticeship (Certificate II in Engineering - Mechanical Fitter and Machinist) and/or other studies that support the pathway (not essential but highly regarded)
- Previous exposure to operational mining and/or mechanical work experience (not essential but highly regarded)
Our Process - IMPORTANT INFORMATION

- Copies of all supporting documentation such relevant certifications and/or qualifications

Step Two: If your application is shortlisted and progressed to the next stage, you will be contacted and invited to attend an Assessment Centre which will consist of the below activities:
- Speed Interviews
- Group Activity
- Information Session
- Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment.
Assessment Centre Date - Tuesday 8th September 2026
You must attend the Assessment Centre in person to be considered for a position. If you are rostered on shift, please speak to your leader.
Step Three: Applicants will be notified of the outcome by the end of October 2026. Successful external applicants will be required to complete pre-employment checks and onboarding.
Start dates are scheduled for early February 2027.
