We are currently seeking an Archive Assistant to join Rio Tinto’s Archive and History team on a 12 Month Fixed Term Contract in Melbourne.

Based across Rio Tinto’s office on Collins Street and the Archive at Melbourne University in Brunswick, you will report into the Group Archivist & Historian, where you will;

  • Create item-level metadata and reviewing for consistency and accuracy
  • Cataloguing, naming and metadata creation for ingestion of digitised and born-digital records in the Digital Asset Management System
  • Evaluating materials for copyright status and rights management
  • Assisting in appraisal, accessioning, retrieval, disposal, access, research, and preservation of records in hardcopy and digital formats
  • Identifying and prioritising archival materials for digitisation
  • Organising digitisation and/or photography of records
  • Assisting in planning, developing, and implementing procedures, processes, guidelines and tools for management and access to Rio Tinto’s archives
  • Assisting in re-housing, arranging, and describing archival materials in all formats in accordance with professional standards and best practices, including the creation of database records and developing archival finding aids
  • Responding to research requests

About you

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Experience with ingest, metadata creation, and preservation of born-digital and digitised materials, including workflows and methodologies
  • Demonstrated experience in applying archival standards and best practice for appraisal, processing, arrangement, and description of analogue and digital records and artefacts
  • Working knowledge of the use and application of archival descriptive and content standards
  • Excellent attention to detail, ability to prioritize tasks, and to work independently, meeting a high standard of work
  • Ability to lift boxes up to 10kg
