We are looking for an Area Manager, Gudai-Darri Studies to join the Rio Tinto Projects team to lead the engineering for expanding our Gudai-Darri Operations. As Rio Tinto’s most technologically advanced mine, Gudai-Darri is safer and more productive, and this position offers a unique opportunity to be part of a collaborative team that is shaping the future of iron ore production in the Pilbara.

The Area Manager, Gudai-Darri Studies will be central to coordinating efforts with Rio Tinto Iron Ore teams, engineering partners and contractors. This role will focus on delivering the Belele-Hillside Pre-Feasibility Study (PFS) and other various strategic studies. Reporting to the Project Manager, Gudai-Darri and delivering on business and delivery excellence you will be expected to:
- Oversee assigned engineering packages from scope definition through detailed engineering phases.
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders to foster a collaborative and improvement-focused culture.
- Manage engineering performance to ensure compliance with Rio Tinto’s standards and the PM+ framework.
- Lead the engineering efforts, including the engagement and management of specialist contractors and consultants.
- Implement engineering innovations and improvements to optimise the value creation process.
- Track and report on study and engineering performance indicators to meet business requirements.
- Identify and mitigate key study risks while maximizing opportunities to enhance project outcomes.
- Provide technical support and direction to engineering teams, leveraging and sharing lessons learned.
- Prepare and coordinate study assurance activities, including Stage Gate Reviews and Approvals.
- Develop and maintain an inclusive and supportive work environment in line with Rio Tinto’s values.
- Offer coaching and guidance to project team members.
What you’ll bring
- A strong dedication to the safety and wellbeing of yourself and your team.
- A relevant degree in project management, engineering, or a similar field.
- Over 5 years of experience at the same level on large-scale mining or industrial projects.
- Experience in the design and/or construction of crushers and conveyors is advantageous.
- Demonstrated extensive technical, practical, and leadership experience.
- Proven skills in setting goals, managing time, prioritizing tasks, and allocating resources effectively.
- A collaborative approach with the ability to solve complex problems with stakeholders.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
