The Technology Development team in Group Technical – Services and Delivery works across a broad range of unique mining technologies that include machine automation projects such as the Autonomous Drilling System, real-time data platforms and 3D visualisation systems.

The Automation Hardware team sits within the Technology Development team specialising in physical autonomy product development and deployment. Our capabilities include:

  • Hardware component & system development (sensors, embedded platforms, physical integration)
  • Product build and delivery process (Assembly, Installation & Commissioning, Quality Management)
  • Integrated supply chain development and management (Supply Chain as a Factory)
  • Business Integration & Sustainability process modelling (Procurement, Operational Support and Maintenance strategies & tactics)

 About the role

We are looking for an experienced Automation Technical Specialist specialising in technology supply chains to join an established development team tasked with the ongoing development of physical surface mining technologies, including the Autonomous Drilling System (ADS). The role shall report to the Principal Advisor - Automation Hardware, and shall undertake duties including:

 Support product selection and suitability studies for new automation hardware/ automation products

  • Apply technology supply chain knowledge to develop quality focussed assembly processes in collaboration with Automation Hardware specialists, OEMs, integration partners and vendors
  • Conceptualise, develop, and maintain technology vendor scope specifications in collaboration with Automation Hardware specialists, OEMs integration partners and vendors
  • Conceptualise, develop, and maintain supplier and integrator supply models to deliver technology products to Rio Tinto supply specifications
  • Apply vendor and industry knowledge to support planning, and scheduling activities related to product delivery, including preparation and distribution of supply chain delivery status reports
  • Support cost modelling activities related to hardware automation products
  • Support deployment of solution to site (including site trials), working with the customer (Product Groups) to provide end user training/ awareness (where required) on the product value to site operations
  • Perform sustainability audits of OEM, integrator, and vendor quality processes
  • Provide vendor support, and manage technical and specification changes relating to parts obsolescence
  • Apply customer (site) and business system knowledge to provide deployment and operational support for supply chain related activities
  • Apply continuous improvement techniques to supply chain processes and activities
  • Design verification and validation of hardware automation products
