BHP Indigenous Only – First Year Intern Program 2024

BHP acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Cultural Knowledge Holders of the lands across this country and pays respect to them, and their Elders past and present. As a business that works across many locations in Australia, we have a responsibility to listen, learn and walk alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to enable our activities to support ongoing connection to their lands, waters, cultures, languages and traditions. We deeply respect and value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander custodianship of this land of 65,000 years and beyond.

Indigenous Peoples are critical partners and stakeholders in many of BHP operations both within Australia and around the world. Many of our operations are located on or near lands traditionally owned by or under the customary use of Indigenous Peoples and the long-term nature of our operations allows us to establish long lasting relationships with these Indigenous communities.

BHP is a leading global resources company that extracts and processes a range of minerals; resources necessary for families, towns, regions and nations.  We provide the materials for essential infrastructure, enabling better standards of living and facilitating greater sustainability and prosperity for generations to come.  Our products are essential for global economic growth and the energy transition to a lower carbon world.

As a first-year university student who is currently studying either an Engineering or Science degree, you are becoming curious about where your degree could take you. You may not have thought about joining the resources sector, but BHP has introduced a first-year intern program that will give you a unique opportunity to explore a world of career possibilities.

Our paid intern program is designed with you in mind, as you gain exposure across disciplines including Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geoscience, Geomatics and more, as well as collaborating on an Environmental, Sustainability or Social Value project with other interns.

Our intern program will give you an understanding of mining from some of the best in the industry and you will also be offered a mentor to guide you and is available to provide support throughout your degree. If you perform well and develop an interest in the mining industry you will be eligible for a second placement.

Joining as an Intern, you will be based in one of our corporate offices (Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide) that is closest to your home university, and it is likely that this will also incorporate some time working remotely. To broaden your experience, you and your fellow interns will spend one week at one of our mining operations, where under the guidance of some experienced managers you will get to see how a mine site operates. As our operations are based in regional Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia, you will be provided with flights, safety equipment and clothing, accommodation, and meals during your time on site.

Our program commences on the 8th of January 2024 for 5 weeks, and for you to get the most out of the program, you will need to participate for the entire duration. Please submit your application by 11th September 2023
