About GEMCO

Located on tropical Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory,  the GEMCO operation is accountable for over 20% of the world’s manganese ore production. Groote Eylandt is home to the Anindilyakwa people, who are the traditional owners of the land and have been working alongside GEMCO since 1963.

This role is a 4/3 Roster, FIFO Darwin or Cairns or can be offered as residential on a full-time ongoing basis. 

About the role

In response to increasing pressures on threatened species, GEMCO in partnership with the Anindilyakwa Land Council is undertaking strategic planning to address the key threats to Groote Eylandt’s biodiversity assets. In line with its Biodiversity Offset Strategy (BOS) and the Groote Eylandt Threatened Species Management Plan (TSMP), conservation and research programs related to the management of inappropriate fire regimes, feral cats, weeds and threatened species research is being undertaken.

The principal - Biodiversity Offsets will be responsible for the planning and implementation of GEMCO’s conservation programs and biodiversity offset management programs, undertaken in collaboration with subject matter experts, the Anindilyakwa Land Council’s Land & Sea Ranger Unit and the Northern Territory Government.

Some of your main responsibilities will include:

Project Management / Leadership

  • Implement GEMCO’s Biodiversity Offset Management Plan, consistent with the TSMP and GEMCO’s regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that conservation programs are adequately scoped, with capable resources identified, forecast budgets, timelines and deliverables clearly defined..
  • Develop a structured reporting and evaluation framework that enables conservation programs to be reviewed and assessed.
  • Provide regular progress updates to the TSMP Steering Committee.
  • Maintain strong collaborative partnerships, and relationships with key stakeholders including members of the Anindilyakwa Land & Sea Rangers, Traditional Owners, the NT Department of Environment, Parks & Water Security (DEPWS) and specialists.
     

Stakeholder Engagement
 

  • Strategically plan for genuine and proactive stakeholder engagement that creates mutual value for the company, local communities, government and other stakeholders.
  • Promote Indigenous stakeholder engagement partnerships through their involvement in conservation management programs.


About you
 

You’ll be a great fit if you have:
 

  • Knowledge and experience with environmental and ecological issues relevant to conserving threatened terrestrial fauna species, including fire management, feral cat management and weed management
  • Strong practical experience managing field-based conservation programs and ideally, working with Indigenous Rangers.
  • Demonstrated understanding of biodiversity offset requirements under the EPBC Act and experience in the development of Biodiversity Offset Management Plans
  • Demonstrated ability to scope complex field-based terrestrial threatened species research projects.
  • Well-developed communication skills, including the ability to prepare and communicate technical information and management advice to a diverse range of people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with consultants to ensure timely submission of reports and the safe completion of field studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop partnerships and liaise effectively with a variety of stakeholders, including government authorities, non-government organisations and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal landowners.
  • Proven ability to work with limited supervision and meet deadlines whilst managing multiple complex tasks.


Qualifications
 

  • Tertiary qualifications (Bachelor of Natural Resources, Science, Ecology).
  • Strong experience managing field-based conservation programs and working with Indigenous Rangers
  • Familiar with Mapinfo/ ArcGIS spatial data management
  • Post graduate qualifications in wildlife ecology or conservation biology (Desirable)
