Led by the Chief Decarbonisation Officer, the Energy & Climate team works collaboratively across the business to drive delivery of the Group climate strategy and address our key sources of carbon emissions

The newly established Decarbonisation Office (DO) is central to Rio Tinto’s decarbonisation investment decisions, responsible for interrogating projects and ultimately recommending and deploying the Group’s capital into its most attractive decarbonisation investments. The DO is also responsible for carbon accounting and providing senior leadership with advanced strategic insights.
We are looking for Carbon Controllers who will be the key interface with Rio Tinto’s assets and the primary originator of its carbon accounting data. The Carbon Controller is the foundation of Rio Tinto’s ‘one source of truth’. Reporting to Manager – Carbon Controllership the Product Group Carbon Controllers will be deeply involved in the primary origination of raw historic and actuals data, working closely with colleagues within the assets to derive carbon emissions data from physical observations.
You will be responsible for:
- Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with Product Groups and act as conduit for problem solving at the asset level
- Ensuring a consistent, unified approach to carbon reporting in accordance with the Carbon Controllership team standard procedure
- Overseeing and verifying entry of facility/plant and asset level Scope 1 and 2 source greenhouse gas data across time frequencies for the nominated Product Group
- Owning, maintaining and reporting on Rio Tinto’s actual emissions data
- Supporting, where required, asset level training for completion of source data including the Social and Environment Survey or Enablon technology solution
- Acting as key interface with Product Group compliance reporting teams for queries on Product Group specific carbon data
- Acting as key interface with the Product Group for any core operational changes that require updates to carbon reporting systems
- Ensuring the consistent application and of Rio Tinto’s carbon accounting ‘basis of preparation’ standards
- Sourcing and collating Business Unit physicals for nominated Product Group for the development of annual and 10 year plan carbon forecasts
- Identifying and escalating novel insights arising from Product Group data capture processes
- Other ad-hoc initiatives as required by the Manager Carbon Controllership to enhance the carbon accounting environment.
About you
- Diligent and thorough work ethic with the ability to meet strict monthly reporting deadlines
- Detail orientated, advanced experience with non-standardised calculation data and use of Excel
- Familiarity with accounting and / or carbon reporting principles and processes
- Continuous improvement mindset with an appetite to improve current reporting practices
- Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with a demonstrated ability to engage and influence at various levels
- Knowledge of various Product Group operations preferred
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
- Decarbonisation / energy experience preferred but not essential.
