Title: Chief Engineer – Rail 

Work location: Perth based (Hazelmere) 

Roster: 5/2 Roster (Mon to Fri) 

In support of Fortescue’s strong focus on green energy and our carbon neutrality targets, one of our key projects is the Infinity Train which will harness gravitational energy and utilise regenerative battery electric technology to remove reliance on charging infrastructure.

Our multiple rollingstock projects will significantly contribute to FFI becoming a major OEM in the growing global market for green industrial transport solutions. Join us in developing unique products that pioneer green technologies, capture their value, and distribute them globally. 

Based out of our new Hazelmere R&D facility and reporting to the green fleet development Head of Engineering and working closely with the Rail Project Managers, we are presently looking for an experienced Chief Engineer Rail.

Key accountabilities will include: 

  • Develop and lead a forthcoming team of rail specialist/engineers and/or contractors in concept development and subsequent detailed design engineering for rollingstock projects 
  • Providing technical guidance to the rail project management team with all rail engineering related works being carried out 
  • Proactively deliver on the company’s stretch targets 
  • Ensure overall delivery of engineering to the project schedule and key milestones 
  • Establish and deliver on engineering progress reporting at the appropriate level based on the audience, from Package level through to overall project level 
  • Ensure all engineering meets with supporting evidence the Operational and System requirements and defined for the project 
  • Ensure development of the required technical specifications to meet project specific objectives 
  • Interpret, manage and approval of engineering drawings, documents, specifications, and scopes 
  • Resolution of technical and design issues 
  • Provide guidance regarding project budget, cash flow and schedule for existing and future projects 
  • Liaising with a range of key stakeholders on all technical aspects of projects 
  • Set up and govern best practice engineering standards and specifications for the Infinity Train project teams 
  • Be the primary point of contact for all communications with stakeholders relating to all engineering requirements 
  • Manage risk and safety within the team 
  • Ensure compliance to the Functional and Process safety requirements through appropriate Safety in Design practices. 
  • Ensure appropriate change management practices are implemented to meet the requirements of the project 

Qualifications and skills required: 

  • Engineering degree, electrical or control systems is desirable 
  • Minimum 20 years’ experience in the rail industry (heavy haul rolling stock experience is desirable) in a senior engineering management position and comfortable to work in the capacity of a subject matter expert 
  • Previous engineering experience working in a product development environment is highly desirable 
  • Highly skilled in leading and developing a multi-disciple engineering team. A passion for coaching and mentoring qualified engineers 
  • Experience in contractor engagement and contractor management process 
  • Ability to adjust to change quickly and adapt to new requirements 
  • Capable of prioritizing and delivering work in a fast-moving environment 
  • Excellent interpersonal awareness with ability to work well in a team 
  • Proactive and self-motivated, with a drive for excellence 
  • Results driven, responsible and accountable 
  • Skilled in problem solving rapidly
