Rio Tinto Copper is seeking a Chief Mining Engineer - Underground to join our Central Technical group and provide technical leadership across our underground portfolio consisting of world class operating mines, development projects and future prospects. The central technical teams, reporting through to Copper’s Technical Director, exist in a matrixed structure to provide high level subject matter expertise to the assets, as well as governance and assurance processes, life of asset planning and major risk/hazard management.

Rio Tinto Copper’s portfolio comprises some of the world’s most technologically advanced underground mines and projects including Oyu Tolgoi, Resolution, Kennecott and La Granja. As the product group’s most experienced underground SME, this role will be a key advisor on industry best practice when it comes to the various mining methods and relaying this expertise through influence and collaboration with the Operations and the Centre of Expertise (CoE).

Reporting to the Technical Director, and leading a team of highly capable and experienced underground mining professionals, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Championing leading practice underground safety in design, construction and operations
  • Providing world class expertise in tactical and strategic mine planning and design
  • Providing mining technical leadership and direction to all underground studies, projects and operations, evaluating and delivering best for business outcomes
  • Contributing to the development of functional strategies, across medium to long term asset planning horizons
  • Leading continuous improvement and innovation initiatives and programs
  • Building organisational capability across all aspects of underground mining with a focus on caving and stoping
  • Improving the underground mining process and the way that Rio Tinto manages underground technical risks
  • Enabling initiatives to drive integration of risk into core decision making processes
  • Managing key stakeholder relationships where there are strong site and group wide interfaces with the work
  • Ensuring all Group initiatives (Standards & Guidelines) are incorporated into the work of Technical & Studies including project reviews
  • Ensuring appropriate governance structures are established to provide assurance over technical decisions that can materially impact the business
