Owned and Operated by Yancoal Australia, Mount Thorley Warkworth (MTW) is an open cut mine that provides the opportunity to live and work locally. Located 15 kilometres south-west of Singleton in the beautiful Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, MTW relies on both dragline and load haul systems for their continuous operations. The MTW Mine is the largest open cut operation in the region, employing approximately 1,450 people who reside in the local and surrounding communities.
Job Tasks and Responsibilities
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Water & Tailings Operator to join our CHPP and General Works team. In this role, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of water and tailings management systems, as well as a range of mobile equipment including excavators (3t, 5t, <10t), loaders, skid-steers and tippers. You will play a key part in maintaining compliance with safety and environmental standards while supporting continuous improvement across site operations.
The role will also require you to:
- Conduct timely responses to operational issues identified during inspections
- Complete Daily, Weekly and Monthly inspections in accordance with Dam Safety NSW requirements
- Carry out environmental inspections to meet site and departmental standards
- Maintain cleanliness and housekeeping across CHPP and General Works areas
- Operate mobile equipment safely and efficiently as required
- Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on production, safety and environmental performance
- Communicate and coordinate activities that support the Water and Tailings Management Plan, including permits, road maintenance, weed control and improvement works
In this role you will be reporting to the General Works Supervisor whilst working a day shift only roster (12 hour shifts), 2-panel, 7-day coverage.
Skills and Experience

To be successful in the role you will also display the following skills and attributes:
- Demonstrated experience in tailings and water management
- Completed Dam Safety NSW training in Surveillance of embankment dams-routine inspections
- Knowledge of MTW Dam Safety Awareness, Water Handling Management, and Pit Dewatering
- Experience with water facilities and tailings management systems
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication skills with the ability to share knowledge effectively
- A proactive, solutions-focused approach and the ability to perform under pressure
- Minimum 3 years’ industry experience with relevant qualifications, including:
- HR Licence
- Excavator (3t,5t)
- Loader
- High-risk work qualifications
- Basic computer literacy
Along with strong technical knowledge you will also possess strong work ethic, proven commitment to safety, ability to work in a dynamic team and have a ‘can do’ approach to work challenges. You must have a commitment to continuous improvement whilst meeting environmental standards.
