Work location: Perth based (Hazelmere)
Roster: 5/2 Roster (Mon to Fri)
In support of Fortescue’s strong focus on green energy and our carbon neutrality targets, one of our key initiatives will be in our Green Fleet projects whereby we will develop and test a range of technologies to power our mining and marine fleet
Based out of our new Hazelmere R&D facility and reporting to the Thermal & Fuel Systems Principal, we are presently looking for an experienced Combustion System Engineer to join the team
Key accountabilities will include:
- Generating combustion system concepts for 2-stroke and 4-stroke rail and marine engines running with zero carbon fuels.
- Developing combustion system components suitable for engine demonstrators, prototypes and production.
- Directing combustion testing development to achieve desired outcomes.
- Supporting the numerical analysis development of the combustion system.
- Supporting the design group in generation of 3D CAD and associated drawings of combustion systems and equipment.
- Supporting automation, control and measurement hardware and software development.
Qualifications and skills required:
- Mechanical / Chemical engineering degree.
- At least 5 years’ experience in engine combustion system conceptualization, design, development and productization, at an engine OEM and / or engine research facility.
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary team and coordinating engine performance tests based on theoretical analysis towards desired outcomes.
- Strong background in engine testing environments, detailed knowledge of engine measurement equipment, parameter tuning and combustion process development including fuel consumption and emissions during performance mapping.
- Experience with alternative fuels (Hydrogen, Ammonia, Methanol, Natural Gas) desired.
- Expert understanding of IC engine combustion systems including turbocharging, fuel injection equipment and exhaust after treatment, operational requirements, development and validation of associated control system hardware, software and calibration.
- Air flow calculations for turbo matching and air-fuel ratio control, component sizing for all engine operating requirements.
- Engine combustion stability evaluation and understanding effects on durability.
- Conversant with associated combustion system numerical analysis and simulation tools.
- Know how to create engine performance testing programs for a variable range of engines.
- Experience working in multi-disciplinary engineering team.
- Ability to work across multiple work fronts in a high-pressure environment
