The Communication Specialist plays an integral part in providing communication support to Pacific Operations sites and functions. The role touches on many areas of communication including strategy, planning and leader communication as well reporting, and as issues management and preparedness.

The Specialist will be part of small but highly effective team. They must be comfortable in a dynamic face-paced environment working directly with senior leaders across multiple projects with conflicting deadlines.

A key component of the role involves supporting site teams and communication to bring a ‘one aluminium’ focus to their activities. Our focus on reaching frontline leaders through video means skills in videography (including storyboarding and filming) will be highly regarded. The role involves site travel on an ‘as required’ basis.

The successful applicant will be tech-savvy and comfortable engaging with a broad range of internal stakeholders and be in a position to interface with and influence senior leaders and site-based teams to achieve results.

  • Work with the Communication Manager and Communications Advisor to provide high-quality communication support to the Aluminium product group with a focus on our Australian and New Zealand operations (Pacific Operations) 
  • Film, edit and produce videos for an internal audience
  • Engage site teams and work with them to develop simple communications plans, making use of proven tactics and approaches that deliver successful and impactful outcomes.
  • Contribute to the execution of internal and external communications strategies.
  • Support Managing Director Pacific Operations and Senior Leadership Team communications, including monthly video messages and employee town halls
  • Prepare award submissions, speeches and presentations for senior leaders
  • Source, generate and produce materials in line with PacOps strategic priorities
  • Work closely with RTA and Group communication teams as required, contributing to Rio Tinto-wide communications channels
  • Coach and develop site-based team members in best practice communication methods
  • Management of performance metrics and reporting

What you will bring

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience (ideally more) in a communications role preferably in the mining industry.
  • A bachelor’s degree in communications or related discipline/field such as journalism, public relations or marketing.
  • Ability to work unsupervised, managing projects
  • Effectively engage and manage various stakeholders
  • Video production experience – preferably in a mining or ‘high-vis’ environment
  • Strong writing skills and editing skills
  • Basic level of design experience (beneficial)
  • Creativity, initiative and curiosity.
