Newcrest Mining is seeking experienced Construction Managers with a strong civil background. As a member of the Newcrest Owners team, you will lead the construction of the Cadia Valley Tailings storage facilities in order to:
- Ensure all construction activity is undertaken in a safe, timely, cost effective and efficient manner
- Delivery of tailings construction requirements in-line with technical requirements
- Manage all Major Hazards and project construction risks

Cadia Valley Operations is located in Central Western New South Wales, approximately 25 kms outside the vibrant regional township of Orange and a convenient three hours from the capital city of Sydney. Employees reside in varied accommodation options in and around the district of Orange with the surrounding area’s occupied by wineries, stone fruit orchards, farming and national parks.

Who we’re looking for
Our preferred candidate will demonstrate considerable experience in similar leadership roles with strong technical knowledge in delivering significant brownfield civil works and dams construction projects. Similarly, our preferred candidate will demonstrate proficiency in managing project/construction budgets and driving project schedules whilst maintaining the highest levels of safety.
- Ensure all construction activity is undertaken in a safe, cost effective and efficient manner consistent with site and project safety requirements, Newcrest global standards, and ANCOLD and GISTM guidelines and specific design and methodology requirements
- Visibly role model safe and operationally disciplined leadership through regular infield interactions including System Verifications, FCCC’s, VFSL’s and participation in the delivery of Newcrest’s Cultural Safety Program, Newsafe.
- Providing leadership to the Construction team and drive high performance to develop, monitor and improve tailings operations across the project. Overseeing safe work practices, staff work programs, professional development and administrative requirements of all direct reports.
- Develop construction strategies to assist deliver work in-line with program, budget, quality and sub-contractors obligations.
- Co-ordinate the tracking and monitoring of construction performance against plan, including the development and implementation of any corrective action plans required to meet long term construction quality, schedule and cost targets.
- Providing critical input into the project master schedule. Inclusive of regular updates against actual construction performance to ensure budget and schedule forecasts and earned value estimates remain accurate.
- Own and verify the as-built construction surveys and conduct EOM, EOQ, EOFY reconciliations.
- Be a critical contributor to the planning process and undertake reviews of the weekly/monthly/3MRP plans.
- Manage and implement WHS critical control reporting, remote sensing, and evaluation against trigger action response plans (TARPs).
- Interface with the Cadia Valley projects team as required to ensure that construction permitting requirements are completed in compliance with site standards including other relevant infrastructure projects and existing services.
- Monitor the delivery partner(s) and other key stakeholders contractual responsibilities pertaining to construction.
- Work with the HR manager to monitor and manage workplace culture including diversity and inclusion metrics, speak-out’s, and behavioral complaints.
- Supporting the HSE manager, and TSF Area Manager in their duties regarding the social, community and environmental interface.
- Onboarding and management of contractors as required.
You will also possess the following:
- Construction qualifications (civil/mining) or engineering (civil/mining/geotechnical) essential
- Relevant additional WHS / OH&S related qualification highly desirable
- 20 years of construction, with significant exposure to civil works and dams construction and understanding of upstream, centre line and sands dam construction methods
- Working knowledge of typical regulatory, social and environmental issues related to tailings management eg GISTM, ANCOLD, ICOLD and other industry guidelines
- Experience working in a mining operation
- Self-managed, motivated, and committed to working in a fast-paced environment
- Proven leadership and people management skills in environments with a large number of line reports
- Proven commercial acumen including planning and reporting on progress, cost and risk
- Be solutions orientated and display a personal commitment to health & safety
- Ability to build a strong team around you and invest in their growth
