Role Purpose-To support the planning and execution of construction activities within SCM27, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of brownfield scopes. This role acts as a key interface between engineering, construction, and commissioning teams, translating design into executable work and resolving technical issues during the outage.
Accountabilities with the biggest impact:
- Work in close collaboration with several stakeholders to coordinate and lead construction readiness activities, including constructability reviews, construction risk assessment workshops and work pack development.
- Embrace and create a value-focused and transparent culture within the integrated project team. Be a visible leader of minimum viable solution (MVS) practices.
- Support development and sequencing of Construction Work Packages (CWPs) and Installation Work Packages (IWPs). Set expectation for quality through work packaging process to ensure that smelter outage may be delivered safely and predictably.
- Interface with engineering to ensure design is constructible and aligned with execution strategy.
- Provide technical support during execution, driving technical queries and emergent scope decisions through appropriate technical and Area Management channels.
- Monitor construction progress and ensure alignment with outage schedule and milestones.
- Collaborate with commissioning and operational readiness teams to ensure smooth and organized handover from Construction to Commissioning to Operations.
- Develop demand forecasts for all supporting common services in assigned area, such as scaffolding, cranage and cleaning necessary for execution.
- Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards during construction.
- Support contractor onboarding, site mobilisation, and logistics coordination.
- Participate in risk assessments, SIMOPS planning, and daily execution reviews.
Skills:
- Construction planning, work packaging and proven capability to lead large-scale execution.
- Ability to lead and facilitate work pack development, constructability reviews and construction risk assessment workshops.
- Capable problem-solver with ability to discover and alleviate root-case.
- Ability to bridge stakeholders across diverse backgrounds and organisations – proven ability to engage and collaborate across engineering, construction, major maintenance and commissioning teams.
- Proficiency in project systems and data management tools.
- Clear communication and documentation of technical decisions.
- Risk identification and mitigation in construction environments.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and adapt to emergent scope.
- Experience with BHP’s Operating System (BOS) or similar short-interval control processes will be considered as an asset.
- Experience in construction engineering or construction leadership within major brownfield shutdowns or capital projects.
- Proven ability to manage technical interfaces between design and execution.
- Familiarity with smelter systems and previous experience leading or managing shutdown construction requirements is highly preferred.
- Experience working within an Integrated Project Team (IPT) or EPCM environment.
- Experience with construction performance management systems and cascade of targets from construction schedule to front-line.
- Demonstrated ability to solve problems at root cause through stakeholder engagement and partnership.
- Strong understanding of work pack development, constructability, and commissioning integration.
Qualifications Required:
- Tertiary Qualification in a technical discipline (engineering or construction preferred) or in a business / financial / commercial discipline or Trade Certificate or Project Management Certificate.
- Experience with SmartPlant, COMOS, Materials Manager (MatMan), and ProjectWise.
- Training or equivalent experience in shutdown planning, risk management, or commissioning.
- First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain.
- Manual Driver’s Licence.
