About the Role 

The Operational Excellence team at our Weipa mine operations, is looking to recruit a Contractor Management Specialist to support delivery of Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA) Contractor Management Strategy. 

Key ResponsibilitiesProvide governance, support, assurance and expert advice on contractor management practices across to the operations. Includes developing, coaching and mentoring other professionals and supporting the decision-making processes of leadership 

Managing a small team and reporting to the Manager - Operational Excellence, you will:

  • Adhere to all Rio Tinto standards, policies and procedures
  • Actively foster and communicate a positive safety culture to promote safety awareness and compliance, encouraging prioritisation of safety in all activities and operations
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by identifying, evaluating and implementing improvement opportunities utilising a range of Rio Tinto best practices
  • Collaborate closely with other functions and stakeholders in the performance of duties. These include but are not limited to:-Shutdown Teams-External Suppliers/Contractors-Designated Leaders-Contract Owners-Operational Managers and Superintendents-Procurement-Health and Safety Team-Learning and Development
  • Provide and record coaching, mentoring and governance support to the designated leaders to ensure compliance aligning with the 4 Key Practices of the RT Global CM strategy. (Scope, Operationalise the Contract, Verify the work, Evaluate performance)
  • Work with operations to define gaps in Contractor Management (CM) processes and standardisation, as well as best practice
  • Review and improve CM process, resources, documentation and tools for RTA Weipa based on legislation, CMX Diagnostics and safety and environmental audits
  • Provide contractor voice into HSE Standards
  • Provide support for contractor partners to manage their teams in relation to business priorities
  • Create and deliver training for Designated Leaders identifying key learning objectives.
  • Collaborate with the contractor management peer network to share best practice in CM and ensure consistency
  • Schedule formal performance reviews of all suppliers, both routine and project-based suppliers, ensuring the review, update and reporting of key result areas and performance objectives
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, driving reviews and improvements to the Contractor Management System and identifying opportunities to improve sourcing or contracting arrangements
  • Lead, support and assist department leaders and designated leaders with the Contractor Engagement Solutions systems (CES) 

What You’ll Bring 

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to work autonomously
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and advanced MS office
  • Previous experience in leading teams & ability to develop and deliver training packages
  • Demonstrates understanding of procurement, HSEC, contractor management, processes, practices, governance and reporting.
  • Demonstrated experience in safety management systems
  • Experienced in applying the CM process – with hands on expertise in managing and onboarding contractors. 

Desirable:

  • Previous safely leadership experience
  • Experience in Element 7 of the HSE Management System and the Operationalisation of all relevant policies and procedures
  • Compliance and auditing qualifications 

Qualifications

  • A Current Queensland Australian ‘C’ Class Driver's Licence
  • A business, governance or other technical accreditation is advantageous

Where you’ll be working  

Our Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tons of bauxite.  

Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce—including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.  

The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape
