We are looking for a Corporate Counsel to join our legal team supporting our Closure and Community Social Performance teams. Reporting to the Corporate Counsel for Community Social Performance (CSP) and External Affairs, you will primarily support these teams in delivery of a Closure project including advising on non-judicial dispute aspects, litigation risk and commercial aspects as well as providing general legal support for the CSP Area of Expertise which advises the Rio Tinto Group globally.

Reporting to Corporate Counsel, Community Social Performance & External Affairs you will;

  • Demonstrate solid and clear analysis of legal risks including corporate, commercial, regulatory, compliance and reputational aspects and provide timely, accurate, independent and commercially focused legal advice
  • Advise on compliance with not only legal obligations but also international commitments, company policies and standards
  • Manage external counsel relationships and cost-effective support
  • Provide general legal support both on legal risk exposure and commercial / corporate advice to a Closure project and CSP Area of Expertise
  • Guide and advise leadership on current and future risks and managing these
  • Work with diverse internal stakeholders to provide practical strategic advice
  • Maintain awareness of all material internal business developments and external legal developments which may lead to a need for legal advice
  • Maintain confidentiality protocols

About you

To succeed in this role, you will have;

  • Bachelor’s degree in law, 3-5 years PQE
  • Litigation and disputes experience including strategic advice
  • Comfortable with autonomous contract drafting and negotiation
  • ESG matter experience including human rights highly regarded
  • Knowledge of mining industry highly regarded
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a matrix organization
  • Flexible and collaborative style
  • Commercially minded with experience in engaging with a range of stakeholders both internal and external
  • Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to distil complex legal and risk matters into clear, commercially focused advice and recommendations for business leaders and diverse stakeholders
  • Forward-thinking, with an ability to anticipate and prepare for future legal risk
