About the role
We are looking for a Corporate Counsel to join our team and help provide legal support and strategic advice to the Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA) product group across a broad range of matters. This role is part of the legal team supporting RTA’s Pacific Operations. This role will have the opportunity to be involved in matters across different assets and operations in the Australia-Pacific region.
This role involves:
- Providing timely, accurate and commercial legal advice on commercial, regulatory and operational issues relating to RTA Pacific Operations to support delivery of the business plan and safeguard its business interests and reputation.
- Advising on various joint venture and power supply arrangements/transactions (including decarbonisation and renewable energy initiatives) within the portfolio of assets.
- Reporting to the Chief Counsel RTA Pacific Operations, you will be part of a high performing legal team and the broader Rio Tinto Legal function.
It requires:
- High quality legal skills and commercial acumen to support the operations, commercial projects and opportunities.
- Managing and prioritising multiple matters effectively.
- The ability to develop and maintain close, collaborative, working relationships with colleagues, including internal clients, fellow team members within the Australian and global RTA Legal team, and colleagues within related functions.
- Managing external legal resources in strategic and cost-effective ways.
What You’ll Bring
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- A law degree and post qualification experience as a legal practitioner of at least 8 years in-house or at a top-tier law firm.
- Resource and energy experience highly desirable.
- Excellent communication, writing and drafting skills.
- Strong commercial acumen and solution driven, with the ability to identify solutions and negotiate commercial outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to develop strong working relationships, including the ability to work collaborately within a matrix organisation and multi-disciplinary project teams.
- Effective time management and personal organisational skills.

Rio Tinto Legal is responsible for providing legal services to the highest standard to the Rio Tinto Group, including headquarters, operating business units and service divisions. It also provides policy development and advice in the area of legal matters which are within its core competencies. As a Business we operate in a collaborative manner globally and within regions in order to share knowledge and best practice and achieve a consistent approach amongst the Group’s lawyers (including the lawyers in shared resources centres such as London, Melbourne, Montreal, Perth and Salt Lake City and the lawyers embedded within business units).
