We are looking for a Corporate Counsel who will be accountable for legal support to Rio Tinto Iron Ore construction projects. The incumbent is to operate in a team environment with other members of Rio Tinto Legal to ensure that legal support for Rio Tinto Projects is provided in an efficient and timely manner.

This role has a strategic focus in advising senior management on the legal aspects of major projects and the resolution of construction related disputes that may arise. This will require the application of both business and legal acumen. The role requires the management of external counsel engaged from time to time and includes the provision of direction and leadership to such counsel. This role will need to support and implement the policies and practices of the Rio Tinto Group in respect of business integrity and other matters of corporate significance.

Reporting to the Chief Counsel – Rio Tinto Projects and working within the Rio Tinto Legal team, you will be responsible for:

  • Negotiation of contracts associated with the construction of major projects
  • Analysis of legal risks, including antitrust, affiliated party transactions, confidentiality and legal compliance
  • Actively participate in strategic planning and management of legal costs and budgets for your area of responsibility
  • Provision of advice and assistance in managing legal matters / risks, including providing the legal parameters for strategic business objectives as varying scenarios arise or are considered
  • Assessment of most appropriate means of providing legal advice for particular matters
  • Cost effective management of external legal resources
  • Drafting and negotiation of legal documents, as well as reviewing and developing template documentation
  • Management of litigation and disputes, including strategic approach
  • Legal training for executives and staff
