About the role
Are you a passionate and experienced leader looking for your next leadership opportunity? Do you have strong attention to detail and ability to work within a team which operates as a true production facility and has a large impact on our operations?
We are looking for a Crew Leader to lead a large team in our Carbon Rodding area where you will supervise Process Technicians whom who are working across operations including forklift, major fixed plant, molten metal and mobile equipment.
The Rodding Crew Leader takes accountability for assisting the direction of the team, aligning with the Superintendent in the direction of the larger output team, providing coaching and feedback to crew members, and leading the crew to deliver specific quality and quantity of output in a safe, agile and effective manner.
It is an expectation to create a culture within the Crew which is aligned to the specific business objectives, and to display behaviours consistent with structured problem- solving and operational excellence.
Reporting to the Superintendent Carbon Operations, you will be:
- Leading the Crew in a way that ensures that the performance of the team meets or exceeds plan
- Deliver operational excellence by identifying and implementing improvement initiatives.
- Conduct required audits and inspections to a high standard, and for the purpose of reinforcing a strong HSE culture and systems.
- Ensuring targets are consistently delivered in a sustainable/ timely manner and with maximum customer satisfaction
- Developing relief Crew Leaders and other required capability within the team
About you
We are looking for someone who can lead large, complex teams in a busy environment, and we believe, to set you up for success; you will either already be working in our industry and looking for the next step in your career OR; you are an experienced leader from another heavy industry looking for a change of environment and a new challenge with a fantastic peer group and a supportive and collaborative leadership team.
Either way you will bring:
- A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
- Computer literacy including exposure to Microsoft Word, Excel and SAP
- Ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders
- A passion for people and values-based leadership
- Ability to work 12 hour shifts doing a mixture of days and nights (attractive shift allowance paid).

Where you will be working
Boyne Smelters Limited (BSL)
Opened in 1982, Boyne Smelters Limited is Australia’s second largest aluminium smelter with a 1,000-person strong workforce. Located approximately 20 kilometres south east of Gladstone at Boyne Island on the Central Queensland coast, BSL produces around 500,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum.
Activities at BSL include manufacturing carbon anodes in the carbon plant, aluminium production (smelting) in reduction lines, and casting of molten material into aluminium products ready to ship. The smelter is connected via a conveyor belt to the Queensland Alumina Limited refinery for the supply of alumina.
