We are looking for a Data Architect to join our Exploration team in a global transformational programme, DataXplorer. This programme of work will deliver an evolving ecosystem where trusted data is transformed, integrated, and made accessible via a suite of agile tools and workflows. This programme spans exploration, data and information management and analytics, driving greater value from data, delivering insights to geoscientists and making better decisions faster. Our exploration technical knowledge team within the Rio Tinto Exploration business, is responsible for transforming the way we find, evaluate and mine resources by developing and implementing ground-breaking technologies as part of our rapidly changing, data rich world.
This is a great opportunity for an Architect who has expertise in highly technical environments. Exploration is a rapidly evolving field. To help map, prioritize and test the best minerals targets around the globe, we use surface advanced technologies within geochemistry, airborne geophysics, satellite remote sensing, drillhole spectral scanning and social and environmental data. This is a foundation role in the DataXplorer programme and is key to the future of our business.
Reporting to the Programme Lead and working in a newly created global team, you will be:
- Compiling and maintain data architectural artefacts documenting current state, gap identification and incremental future state opportunities
- Providing guidance and advice to management and the DataXplorer taskforce on the data architecture framework and approach
- Acting as a subject matter expert for data architecture for Ore body Knowledge and functional data systems
- Developing data models and identify data integration opportunities
- Working with the solution development teams to ensure the successful delivery of integrated operational systems and services
- Providing support and direction to the DataXplorer taskforce, system owners and the business in the adoption of data architecture in the culture and systems for current and future value creation
- Provide on-going support, maintenance and governance of the data architecture standard and management tools

- Qualification in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field
- Experience with data architectures for data & analytics platforms, and cloud environments.
- Working knowledge of data architecture approaches for data lake and data warehouse
- Proficiency in working with large datasets containing “technical” data
- Expertise in data modelling techniques, design and tools
- Experience in reporting, business intelligence, analytics and other effective data consumption approaches
- Strong stakeholder management skills
- Agility and adaptability in rapidly changing working environment
- Approaches to handle ambiguity and diverse stakeholder needs

Where you will be working
Rio Tinto's Exploration group seeks to create value for the business by discovering or acquiring new mineral resources. Organized into four regional teams (Americas, Australasia, Africa-Europe and Eurasia), the Exploration group provides both a global reach and a local presence across a range of commodities including bauxite, copper, iron ore, nickel and uranium.
