About the role
We are recruiting a Data Engineer to play a key role in designing and delivering scalable, high-quality data pipelines and platforms to support analytics, digital products, and strategic initiatives across the business. Working closely with product owners, analysts, and data scientists, this role will contribute to building reliable, governed, and future-ready data solutions in Iron Ore.
The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills in data engineering, a background in cloud platforms, and a passion for enabling business value through data.
You’ll be part of a dedicated team, supported by your leader to grow and achieve your own personal goals as well as the goals of the team and the broader RTIO Digital division.
Reporting to the Principal Data Products, the role will see you:
Design, build and optimise end-to-end data pipelines across the data landscape
Develop data ingestion and transformation logic using Python, PySpark, SQL, and Databricks
Ensure data quality, lineage, observability, and maintainability through modern tooling and standards
Apply CI/CD, version control and modular design patterns to data workflows for reliability and scalability
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand data requirements and implement appropriate engineering solutions
Support data migration from legacy platforms to cloud-native solutions
Monitor and enhance pipeline performance and cost-efficiency
Participate in technical reviews, documentation, and mentoring where appropriate
What You'll Bring
A bachelor’s degree in computer science or an engineering discipline is preferred, but progressive industry experience will be considered
Hands-on experience designing and deploying production-ready data pipelines using PySpark, Python, and SQL
Proficiency with cloud-native data platforms such as Databricks, Azure Data Factory, and Delta Lake
Working knowledge of CI/CD practices using Azure DevOps, GitHub or equivalent
Understanding of modern data architecture patterns including medallion (Bronze/Silver/Gold), modular pipeline design, and ELT frameworks
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand and work with complex data sets
Familiarity with data warehousing concepts and dimensional modelling (e.g. star schema)
Excellent communication and collaboration skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Ability to manage competing priorities, work independently, and contribute effectively within Agile teams
A proactive approach to engineering quality, documentation, and maintainability
It Would Also Be Beneficial If You:
Have experience with tools such as Unity Catalog, Microsoft Purview, or similar data governance solutions
Are familiar with Power BI, dbt or semantic modelling concepts
Hold cloud certifications such as Azure Data Engineer Associate or Databricks Certified Data Engineer
Have experience working in agile teams with product thinking
