We are looking for a Development Improvement Officer to support the Superintendent – Mine Development and Development team in the areas of business improvement, improvement of operational efficiencies, technical support, non HME based capital project delivery, HSE systems and training support.This role is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic mining engineer starting out in their career, to take the next step forward with a mining giant. Reporting to the Mine Development Superintendent, you will be:

  • Developing the core competencies for overseeing the Development Team
  • Designing and implement process and systems to ensure that development team gains sustained, maximum value from business improvement, in areas of LEAN, six sigma, process improvement, and asset management
  • Delivering high value, high quality key projects on time and on budget
  • Designing and implement processes and systems to ensure compliance in HSE, Rio Tinto policies, training records, etc.
  • Supporting the team to improve planning, budgeting, and cost control to ensure that cost savings can be easily identified, and reported on in an efficient manner

What you will bring

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering or similar
  • A working understanding of business improvement principles and techniques along with health, safety and environment principles and systems
  • Experience with Cost Management / budget control as well as strong computing and communication skills
  • A strong practical mining or planning background is desirable along with competencies in Business improvement such as six sigma and/ or Lean.
  • Project design and delivery experience a well as an understanding of mining principles and critical issues

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • A sound knowledge of mining and maintenance systems
  • Knowledge of SAP or similar system

Where you will be working

Our Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tonnes of bauxite.

Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce—including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.

The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape.
