We are looking for a Digital Product Lead to play the leading role in driving the development and continuous improvement of Rio Tinto’s Future Scheduling Platform. This platform uses advanced Operations Research & AI algorithms to provide users with decision support capabilities to efficiently manage the largest and most complex integrated iron ore value chain in the world.

The Future Scheduling Platform is currently undergoing a foundational deployment and the Digital Product Lead will be responsible for full accountability of the product after this phase is completed by the end of 2024. Your role will drive both product planning and internal product marketing to ensure widespread recognition and adoption of the Future Scheduling Platform product.

The Digital Product Lead will orchestrate the critical phases of problem discovery, validation and customer engagement, that will enable us to achieve our strategic objectives.

Reporting to the Manager Digital Transformation within the Knowledge, Innovation and Technology Iron Ore division you will transition the product from the build phase, taking accountability for

  • Leading the design of technical solutions and features in collaboration with the technical leads to build decision support to end-users, effectively assisting Rio Tinto Iron Ore to schedule their supply chain more efficiently
  • Defining the Future Scheduling Platform vision, strategy and roadmap
  • Leading a multidisciplinary team of expert operations research specialists, data engineers, full stack developers and data scientists
  • Managing the critical phases of problem discovery, validation and customer engagement
  • Partnering with the Product Owner and Scrum Master to manage and prioritise key pieces of work
  • Managing the requirements of stakeholders and foster collaborative relationships
  • Maintaining the risks and impediments log, partnering with relevant stakeholders to identify and assess accordingly
  • Representing the Future Scheduling Platform for Rio Tinto Iron Ore senior stakeholders

What you'll bring: 

  • Extensive experience working on digital projects and building digital tools with complex data
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, specifically leading multi-disciplinary teams
  • Your ability to problem solve and design solutions in collaboration with tech leads, to guide the development of digital products
  • Demonstrated success in defining and launching products in line with, or exceeding, business objectives
  • Project management experience, specifically working within budgets

Your communication, negotiation and stakeholder engagement skills are required to succeed in this role. You will bring your passion for coaching and an improvement mindset to support the introduction of new ways of working.

It is preferable if you hold an advanced tertiary degree in Mathematics, Operations Research, Engineering, Computer or Data Science. Your previous roles in the mining or industrial goods business will be advantageous for the role, as well as experience in building and developing data science models including operations research models.

Your knowledge and experience in cloud technologies (e.g., Azure) are an advantage.
