We are looking for a Director, Global Risk Practices, Systems and Capability to join our risk function.
This is a great opportunity for a collaborative, dedicated candidate to lead a global team of risk management and technology experts.
Reporting to the Global Head of Risk and working in a collaborative community of professionals across the organization, this is a high-profile leadership role accountable for maintaining and continuously improving Rio Tinto’s risk management framework; you will:
Develop, evolve and implement comprehensive yet user-friendly risk management frameworks, polices, guidance and tools aligned with evolving UK, Australian and US corporate governance requirements and business needs.
Collaborate with leaders from across Rio Tinto’s Product Groups, Group Functions, Centres of Excellence and Areas of Expertise to evolve risk management processes in an integrated way to enable our businesses to effectively and efficiently manage current, evolving or emerging risks.
Effectively manage changes to support the continued relevance and integrity of the Integrated Risk Management (Three Lines of Defence) process by adapting tools, systems and methodologies, as required, with appropriate business impact assessments and stakeholder engagement.
Regularly benchmark performance against peers, changing regulatory requirements and business needs to prioritise continuous improvement of risk processes, systems and tools.
Curate engaging learning content and lead capability development across the risk community and with business leaders globally, interfacing where required with Group-wide Learning & Development programmes.
Develop, continuously improve and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive digital strategy to deliver improved risk management outcomes in an evolving risk environment. Manage governance and operational processes associated with the Risk domain and its integration with other technology domains.
What you’ll bring
A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
Significant experience in corporate governance, risk management and assurance in an organisation of similar scale, complexity and international footprint, including leading the design and implementation of sophisticated risk management frameworks. Strong preference for prior experience with mining, metals processing or other industrial environments or in professional services with significant client exposure to these industries.
Working knowledge of professional risk management standards such as ISO31000 and COSO ERM as well as their application within the listed company corporate governance environments of the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States of America.
Experience in structuring and facilitating problem solving workshops and building consensus with diverse senior stakeholders (within the risk function and across the business) to solve complex technical and adaptive problems.
Ability to lead remote teams, brining strong project management to keep multiple initiatives progressing across time zones on schedule, budget and quality.
Excellent written and verbal English communication skills with the ability to engage and influence both technical and non-technical audiences. Proficiency in French is desirable.
Experience designing and delivering technical training materials.
Tertiary qualifications in business or engineering are required along with recommended professional accreditation or certification in risk management.
Ability and willingness to travel internationally periodically.

Where you’ll be workingRio Tinto’s global headquarters is situated in St. James’s Square, in the City of Westminster, London, on the edge of the West End, and is the site of the group’s original head office. Located over several floors, the office is truly a global hub for the business and is the base for many members of the Executive Committee. As such, the grade II listed office reflects the vibrancy of the location, although it also overlooks the tranquility of the only garden square in the district and is a short walk from Green Park and Piccadilly underground stations.
