Electrical Engineer Decarbonisation - Off Grid Power Systems
Work location: Perth - Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar people.

The Decarbonisation team is the single synthesizer across Fortescue between FFI (including Green Industry and WAE), FMG and related business partners and suppliers. The team’s objectives include the design and implementation of a globally available portfolio of technically and commercially viable decarbonisation solutions. Our immediate focus is to deliver real zero emissions in our Australian iron ore operations by 2030. The Decarbonisation team consists of a mix of core central roles complimented by dedicated and experienced personnel across related functions and operations within the business to ensure joint ownership of optimal solutions from design to deployment.
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Electrical Engineer to lead the design of our off-grid Green Energy Generation System development. You will be supported by a dedicated team of SME (battery and combustible technology) to deliver a reliable, flexible, and sustainable real zero off-grid power system. You will work closely with FMG operational team strongly focus to delivering a solution that meet our operational requirements with high quality, health & safety and engineering standards.
This is a senior role where the successful candidate complements innovative thinking with a proven record of collaboratively delivering value adding initiatives successfully into operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, in collaboration with SME and external consultant, a real zero, off grid power generation system that provides reliability, performance, operational and capital sustainability without compromising the highest level of quality and safety requirements.
- Integrate with a renewable power generation system a safe and efficient zero emission thermal generation system needed to sustain off grid application requirements.
- Run modelling tools/software to optimized micro-grid system to obtain the most efficient and sustainable outcome.
- Develop in collaboration with external consultant a control system logic for battery and thermal generation dispatch to meet power demand and minimized fuel usage.
- Participate in risk assessments to identify potential obstacles during the design, implementation, and operation of real zero off-grid power generation system.
- Develop commission plan including performance test for the proposed real zero off-grid power generation solution to prove the performance and reliability of the system.
- Overseen FAT and SAT process of off-grid power generator system.
- Ensure integrated telemetry, data and analytics systems are developed across proposed real zero off-grid power solution to facilitate measurement-based management.
- Interface with OEMs, OTMs, vendors on every technical aspect.
- Working collaboratively with key stakeholder to guarantee that operational and compliance requirements and engineering standard are met.
- Work closely with FMG’s electrical infrastructure and energy operations teams to ensure all solutions are integrated and considered as part of overall energy management.
- Stay abreast of related green technology trends to ensure solution direction is tested and optimal.
Qualifications and skills required:
- Bachelor’s or master’s Degree qualification in Electrical engineering
- Complementary qualifications in solar, battery or thermal power generation technology are preferred.
- At least 5 years’ design experience in electrical medium a/o high voltage systems
- Strong technical knowledge in power management system control
- Proven experience in integration of renewable power into main grid system (preferable)
- Proven Experience in design, development, and installation of medium/small scale solar system
- Strong technical knowledge and understanding of micro-grid power generation processes, modelling, equipment, and systems including efficiency optimization.
- Strong knowledge of ammonia or hydrogen technology would be highly advantageous with a strong passion for these fields and ability to quickly learn new technology.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Highly efficient, work with a sense of urgency, high energy levels and enthusiasm
