The Amrun Mine Site is located 40 kilometers south west of Weipa with a life expectancy of 40 plus years to expand our bauxite operations and continue production from one of the world’s premier bauxite deposits. This expansion will strengthen the economy and provide exciting opportunities for the people of Cape York and Queensland for future generations.
About the role
We are looking for an Electrical Technical Officer to provide support to the Amrun Plant Maintenance team, with a focus of Electrical Plant improvements around safety, reliability, and maintenance. The role will also include working alongside Tradesmen and Engineers to complete the team’s diversity across all departments.

This role is a great opportunity for someone who has a strong work ethic and can-do attitude. Working a lifestyle (4, 5, 5, 4) roster and reporting to the Superintendent of Plant Maintenance, you will be:
- Providing Electrical and Instrumentation technical support for: Electrical Maintainers, Electrical, Control Systems and Process Engineers, as well as the Plant Maintenance Supervisors.
- Review and improve the effectiveness of electrical asset maintenance strategies and associated support systems.
- Participating in breakdown investigations including Root Cause Analysis, Reviewing Reports, and following up actions and recommendations post investigation.
- Identifying and delivering safe and effective modifications and upgrades of Electrical Assets around the Plant.
- Working with maintenance and shutdown Planners/Schedulers to ensure correct timeline schedules, scope of work, and appropriate personnel assigned to the task.
- Task Managing Contractors and RioTinto Employees during shutdowns and project work.
- Stepping up to Maintenance Supervisor when required.
- Training and Assessing for Tradesmen competencies around VOC’s and Plant Isolation.
- Consulting with OEM and technical experts during breakdown events and communicate relevant information to the team.
- Effectively developing and maintaining relationships with internal and external customers and stakeholders.
About you
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- Current QLD Electrical Fitter/Mechanic’s license or equivalent in Instrumentation or Engineering.
- ‘C’ class driver’s license.
- Demonstrated experience working with Engineers and Tradesmen of all abilities and experience.
- Excellent communication skills both in person and written/procedural.
- Previous experience working in fixed plant within the mining or heavy industrial plant equipment.
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- Higher qualifications around Electrical Engineering/Automation/Instrumentation or equivalent
- Knowledge of High Voltage Isolation and Access procedures
- Supervisory qualifications – S2/S3 or G8/G9
- High Risk licenses such as EWP, Forklift, etc.
- Training and Assessment qualifications.
- SCADA experience, primarily with Factory Talk.
- Experience with SAP CMMS.

Where you will be working
Our Weipa Operations includes three bauxite mines, processing facilities, ship loaders, an export wharf, two ports, power stations, a rail network and ferry terminals. Located on the Western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, each year the operation produces more than 35 million tonnes of bauxite.
Our operations are supported by a 1,900-strong workforce—including 26 per cent who are women and 25 per cent Indigenous employees. Activities include mine operations, maintenance, asset management, ports, cultural heritage management, and processing facility management.
The development of our new mine, Amrun, which was completed in 2018, will extend the life of our Weipa bauxite operations by decades to come and significantly build on our 55-year history on the Western Cape.
