We are currently looking for a Mechanical/Project Engineer to join the Gudai-Darri Operational Readiness team to support the mine and processing facilities with its future expansion plans. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute at a tactical level to the project management, controls, and reporting processes, while supporting the senior and mid-level staff at the site and the study teams in Perth. The role will suit motivated and self-starting individuals who can apply their knowledge of RTIO standards and best practice to ensure operational excellence can be achieved for the current assets and the future expansion of the site. The role will evaluate how the production assets can be improved and expanded to support an increase production output. 

Reporting to the Superintendent Project Readiness, your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Identify, record, monitor, and provide solutions to remedy issues with processing and non-processing infrastructure (Go, Look, see methodology) as they relate to the future development of those assets.
  • Identify and evaluate future capital and operating projects; ensuring that there is integration of these projects with the existing operating personnel, processes and systems during the scoping and planning process and that they are aligned with the Gudai-Darri 5YR and Life of Mine (LOM) plans.
  • Utilise the operating philosophy and the Operational Readiness common vision for the future operation to ensure alignment and common objectives with all stakeholders, including the project and operating teams.
  • Apply project engineering fundamentals related to operational readiness, including providing input into engineering processes and documents such as reviews (design, hazard, operability, maintainability), option analysis, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT), User Requirements Specifications (URS), design bases, scope documents, equipment specifications, general arrangements, flowsheets, piping and instrumentation diagrams.
  • Working with stakeholders D&T (Development and Technology), EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Management), Sustaining Capital, and OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) in the transfer of knowledge and learnings for the operational and maintenance teams, establishing an open line of communication with those involved.
  • Being a point of contact on site for Operational Readiness activities and assisting with queries from RT Major Projects, Engineering Service Providers, and the Iron Ore Study team.

What you’ll bring

  • Proven ability to plan and manage project-based work with a keen eye for detail.
  • Solid working knowledge of RTIO standards and work procedures/guidelines.
  • Willingness to investigate and understand issues and recommend actions.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to develop relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a high functioning team.
  • A knack for thinking about how the parts of a system and project work together.
  • Using systematic approaches to analysing problems, recording findings, and documenting them to inform future decisions.

Our Gudai-Darri iron ore mine is our most technologically advanced mine. In addition to leveraging technology already in use across Rio Tinto, such as autonomous trucks, trains and drills, Gudai-Darri also has more than 70 design innovations including a reclaimer with a rotable bucket wheel, a world class laboratory and in-field access to data and systems for all team members. 

The Caterpillar mining fleet at Gudai-Darri includes autonomous trucks, production drills, and in a world first, autonomous water carts. Located 110km north-west of Newman, Gudai-Darri will produce up to 43 million tonnes of iron ore a year in its first phase, contributing to our flagship product, the Pilbara Blend™. It will also become a production hub for our iron ore business, incorporating world class infrastructure and a 166-kilometre rail line connecting the mine to our existing network. Gudai-Darri is creating jobs and business opportunities in Western Australia. More than 2,000 people have been employed as part of its construction with approximately 600 permanent operational roles created.
