About the role

An exciting opportunity has become available for an Engineer within Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s Rolling Stock Engineering Department. The role will see you contribute to the development and implementation of the Discipline Engineering framework, ensuring safe, cost effective and reliable design and installations are implemented and maintained.

Reporting to the Specialist -Rolling Stock, Rail Engineering, this role will be offered on a 5/2 - 4/3 roster, residentially in Karratha, based out of Rio Tinto’s 7 Mile Site in Dampier, or FIFO from Perth.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Provides technical support to Rail Maintenance, Rail Operations, Rail Engineering, and project delivery teams
  • Participate in targeted projects/activities to meet the asset management strategy, objectives and plans.
  • Participates in process to manage compliance to engineering standards/performance standards.
  • Collects and provide data to monitor health and performance of assets.
  • Implements improvement engineering solutions to ensure sustainable asset performance and risk management

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • A manual C Class Driver's Licence
  • Technical knowledge of Rollingstock engineering principles
  • Working knowledge of asset management principles
  • Understanding of project management principles
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in root cause and problem-solving techniques
  • Experience / familiarity with basic electrical systems / circuits
  • Exposure to PLC’s and control networks / systems is preferred but not required
  • Self-motivation
  • Patience and wiliness to guide others

Where you will be working

Our privately owned and operated rail network is an essential part of our integrated production process and services our 15 mines across the Pilbara via 1,700km of track. With depots located at Tom Price, Cape Lambert and Dampier (7 Mile), each train is operated by a single driver and comprises up to three locomotives and 240 ore cars stretching to approximately 2.7 kilometres in length with over 40 trains operating per day. We are also applying and adapting technology to improve safety and productivity across our rail network.

We operate 200 locomotives on more than 1,700 kilometres of track in the Pilbara, transporting ore from 16 mines to four port terminals. The average return distance of these trains is about 800 kilometres with the average journey cycle, including loading and dumping, taking approximately 40 hours.
