Engineering Design Manager

Roster: Monday to Friday
In support of Fortescue’s focus on green energy and our carbon neutrality targets, one of our key initiatives is the production of green iron ore and steel
Based out at our new Balcatta R&D facility and reporting to the Technology Development Manager, we are presently looking for an experienced Engineering Design Manager with track record of delivering new and challenging projects.
This role leads the delivery of technical engineering, utilising a multidisciplinary engineering team to effectively support the R&D and scale up of Green minerals production.
As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for managing and coordinating internal and external engineering teams to ensure project deliverables are completed to the required quality, schedule and budget.
Key accountabilities will include:
- Lead the Engineering team to scale up laboratory R&D into engineering designs for prototypes and pilot scale electrochemical and mineral processing facilities – including concept development, technology selection, FEED, and detailed design/execution
- Coordinate internal FFI Engineering resources and manage external consultants/contractors, providing ongoing governance of all technical deliverables
- Coordinate Engineering support for Operations Readiness including operating and control philosophies, procedures, test plans, commissioning/start-up
- Act as Engineering authority for key technical decisions and approvals – e.g. Pre Startup Safety Review engineering sign off
- Accountable for ensuring technical assurance is completed and documented on the project (via the wider FFI Engineering team where necessary)
- Champion Process Safety to ensure all activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with FFI HSES (Health Safety Environment and Security) policies and procedures
- Collaborate with other Managers, Leads, and stakeholders to agree and plan scope, resources, priorities and contribute to continuous improvement
- Develop, mentor, and coach members of the Engineering team
- Support the development and improvement of Engineering systems, processes, procedures, standards and specifications
- Have an awareness of new technologies and proactively participate in opportunities to develop your knowledge in this area
Qualifications and skills required:
- Tertiary Engineering Qualifications in relevant field
- Chartered Professional Engineer, or similar professional certification highly desirable
- Minimum 15 years of experience
- Hands-on industry experience in project and/or engineering management for delivery of large complex projects
- Proven leadership skills including excellent communications, work planning and prioritisation, resource management, conflict resolution, stakeholder management, and decision making
- Experience in Mineral Processing, Industrial Chemical Processing, and/or Energy highly desirable
- Experience across all phases of project development including concept development, technology selection, FEED, detailed design, commissioning / startup, and operations would be highly desirable
- Experience in technology development and taking R&D projects to commercialisation would be highly desirable
- Experience engaging and managing OEM, Licensors, Vendors, Contractors and Consultants – including scope writing, tendering, and contract management
- Have a strong understanding of project development frameworks and experience guiding projects successfully through health checks and assurance gates
- Ability to liaise effectively with personnel at all levels of the organisation. Ability to create and articulate the corporate vision influencing organisational values, individual and group goals and management systems.
- Able to work in dynamic and ambiguous environments across multiple work fronts in a fast-paced environment to meet aggressive stretch targets
