About the Role
Port Hedland (FIFO 7D7N:14X)
A current opportunity exists for the an experienced Locomotive Engineering Technician - Mechanical. The successful candidates will be highly motivated, enjoy working in an inclusive & diverse team environment within the locomotive maintenance team, reporting to the LSS Shift Supervisor. As an Engineering Technician - Mechanical, you will be responsible for providing safe, efficient, and high-quality mechanical maintenance and repair of BHP’s SD70ACe locomotives used in heavy-haul iron ore operations. This role ensures locomotive availability and reliability to support BHP’s supply chain, rail haulage, and production targets
Your responsibilities will include:
- Conduct scheduled inspections, preventative maintenance and servicing utilising a standardised work platform in line with BHP standards, OEM (EMD/Progress Rail) manuals, and statutory rail requirements.
- Inspection, refuelling and maintenance associated with Locomotive Preparation.
- Inspect and repair the EMD 16-710 T2 diesel engine, fuel systems, cooling systems, and pneumatic subsystems.
- Diagnose and repair Pneumatic and hydraulic systems including Knorr-Bremse air brake equipment.
- Diagnose faults and replace cylinder power assemblies, traction and generator motor blowers.
- Conduct load testing and performance validation after repairs.
- Support integration of mechanical work with electrical and control systems (microprocessor-based control on SD70ACe).
- Use OEM diagnostic tools and BHP’s SAP/Fiori Computer Management Maintenance System (CMMS) to identify, record, and resolve mechanical faults.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, complete work orders, defect reports, fault logs and condition monitoring records in BHP SAP/Fiori CMMS in accordance with BHP processes.
- Participate in audits, quality checks, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Apply BHP’s safety standards, Operating System (BOS), isolation procedures, and risk management practices during all tasks.
- Contribute to a positive safety culture aligned with BHP’s Charter Values.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce downtime and enhance fleet reliability.
About You
- Trade qualification: Certificate III/IV in Mechanical Engineering, Diesel Fitting, or equivalent.
- Current C-Class driver’s licence; High-Risk Work Licence (Forklift, Dogging).
- Overhead Travelling Crane experience
- Ability to interpret diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Advanced fault-finding and diagnostic skills in diesel engines and rotating equipment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Good communication and reporting skills.
- Computer literacy (SAP, CMMS, OEM diagnostic software).
- Ability to work in a FIFO (7D7N14X) environment.
