About Nickel West

Located 30 kilometres south of the Perth, the Nickel West Kwinana produces nickel briquettes and nickel powder.  While many employees live in Perth, Fremantle and Mandurah, the Kwinana region is a thriving coastal township with three public beaches, excellent schools, modern shopping facilities.  As part of our commitment to health and safety Nickel West Kwinana is a smoke free operation.   We are investing in a Nickel Sulphate plant to be built at our Kwinana refinery south of Perth. We believe there are significant competitive advantages for Nickel West to move downstream into the battery chemical business. 

About the Role

Nickel West has a permanent opportunity to join its Health, Safety and Environment team as an Environment Specialist at its Refinery located at Kwinana Beach, East Rockingham. The Environment Specialist will provide subject matter expertise into the design and establishment of environmental standards, procedures and systems, while facilitating and supporting line management for environmental risk assessments, event investigations, field leaderships and compliance. The candidate will utilise their excellent relationship building and people skills to deliver a wide range of environmental services and initiatives.

In this role you will:

  • Ensure conformance with the BHP Charter, the BHP Our Requirements Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations;
  • Facilitate the Nickel West permit to disturb process including verification activities and clearing reporting requirements;
  • Provide governance of compliance requirements associated with the project (ie works approval conditions);
  • Provide technical Environment advice to support safe and sustainable implementation of projects;
  • Undertake monitoring, data collection and reporting for internal and external purposes across HSE;
  • Engage with key stakeholders including Native Title Holders and relevant regulators;
  • Maintain and provide governance of the ISO14001 certified Environment Management System;
  • Identify strategic environmental focus areas for the operation and engage proactively with line leadership on these matters;
  • Ensure delivery of environmental reports as required by regulatory agencies;
  • Ensure the availability of complete and accurate environmental data to enable risk owner decision making;
  • Supervise contractors involved in the safe and production execution of HSE managed work, and
  • Support the development of environmental approval applications with a focus on communicating/track compliance against approval commitments.

About You

To be successful in this role you will be able to work both independently and as part of a site based team. Attention to detail will be a vital attribute, along with strong business acumen. You will also have:

  • Tertiary Qualification in Environmental Management, Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering is desirable
  • Experience in addressing legislative state and federal environmental requirements.
  • Sound GIS capabilities will also be highly regarded.
  • Experience working within heavy industry or a major hazard facility will be an advantage
  • Ability to build consultative and influential relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
