Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s Geometallurgy team is looking to recruit a degree qualified and industry experienced Evaluation Metallurgist. In this team you will have the opportunity to engage with a broad range of technical challenges. As the name suggests we develop understanding and knowledge of ore characteristics that impact on ore processing, product quality, material handling, beneficiation and iron making. Reporting to the Specialist Product Prediction, key responsibilities for the position will include:

  • Converting metallurgical drill core data to product predictions in mining models
  • Monitoring models prediction performance for operating mine sites and update prediction as required
  • Influence decisions in metallurgical core drilling and metallurgical test work to upload data quality for product prediction purpose
  • Product prediction support (i.e. advise prediction confidence level) to all RTIO mine planning and resource/reserves reporting activities
  • Geometallurgy support (including ore characterisation, material handling and beneficiation potentials) to operations, studies and exploration

This is a permanent position working Monday to Friday out of the Rio Tinto Central Park office in the Perth CBD. There will be flexibility to work from home on occasional days and ad hoc travel to site in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. 

What you’ll bring

To be considered suitable applicants must have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy, Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering or another relevant discipline
  • Current C class driver’s licence
  • Demonstrated experience in processing and/or geology within an iron ore mining environment
  • A demonstrated ability to undertake project work with minimal supervision

It will also be beneficial if you have:

  • Basic knowledge in mineralogy and geology of Pilbara iron or deposits
  • Basic knowledge in mineral separation, orebody characterisation, processing plants and flowsheets design
