About the Role 

South Flank is BHP's newest iron ore mine, and the biggest in 50 years. It expands existing infrastructure at Mining Area C, adding 80 Mtpa of new crushing and screening capacity, an extensive overland conveyor system, expanded stockyards and new train loading facilities to form the largest iron ore hub in the Pilbara region. Its brand new mining fleet is the biggest and best in class, and has been converted to autonomous operation, in line with South Flank's future-facing design.

The Field Officer is responsible for the effective operation of Autonomous Haulage System (AHS), Fleet Management System (FMS) and the Autonomous Haul Trucks (AHTs) whilst in autonomous mode, to ensure the AHTs can travel throughout the mine plan safely and productively. Field Officers work as part of a team, engaging key stakeholders and providing regular feedback to Production Supervisors, AHS Controllers and Production Operators.

The role will entail the following responsibilities:

  • Monitoring of the autonomous operations zone for accuracy
  • Managing the dump plans to ensure the AHTs tip in an optimised way
  • Survey, plan and validate the AHS to ensure any infrastructure or hazards have exclusion zones around them
  • Monitor haul road conditions and place speed restrictions as required.
  • Respond to AHTs if they are stopped out of plan, and undertake recovery of AHTs when they are unable to continue on their plan
  • Further optimise the mine plan and haul routes through infield verification.

About You

Your expertise in problem solving & diagnostics, coupled with your ability to communicate and build strong team relationships will make you an ideal candidate to help influence and shape our culture to ensure a safe, productive, sustainable and disciplined approach to work is maintained. To be successful in this role, you will have the following attributes:

  • Excellent communication skills, and the ability to build relationships across a range of teams
  • Ability to work autonomously in the field for extended periods of time
  • Digital fluency, such as spatial awareness and ability to use systems and technology
  • Able to multitask between systems and large fleets while balancing multiple priorities
  • Practical application of mining operations process and procedure
  • Experience using data and judgement to inform solutions
  • Performing tasks in an agile way, with a continuous improvement mindset, contributing ideas and generation solutions
  • Haul truck and/or other mining equipment competency
  • Willing to work nightshift as part of the roster.
  • Experience with the FrontRunner autonomous system is highly desirable.
