About the Role

BHP Australia - First Year Intern Program 2024 To help build a better world, we need the best talent to help us shape the future we all want. Why not you? Why can’t you be part of the change?

Our purpose is to bring people and resources together to build a better world – it’s the reason we exist.  We have the resources, but we need more good people.  We believe that it is your unique skills, talents and perspectives that will drive innovation and success within our global company.

BHP is a leading global resources company that extracts and processes a range of minerals; resources necessary for families, towns, regions and nations.  We provide the materials for essential infrastructure, enabling better standards of living and facilitating greater sustainability and prosperity for generations to come.  Our products are essential for global economic growth and the energy transition to a lower carbon world.

As a first-year university student who is studying either an Engineering or Science degree, you are becoming curious about where your degree could take you. You may not have thought about joining the resources sector, but BHP has introduced a first-year intern program that will give you a unique opportunity to explore a world of career possibilities.

BHP’s “Resourcing Your Future - First Year Intern Program” is designed with you in mind.  You’ll gain an understanding on how BHP is helping to build a better world through responsible mining of the commodities the world needs and how technology is being embraced to build a safer and more efficient workplace. You will learn about Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geoscience, Geomatics and more which will provide you with insights into a range of careers that are on offer.

Throughout the program, you will hear from BHP team members who will share their technical and professional insights, as well as learning about BHP as an organisation.  A key highlight of the program is that you will collaborate with other interns on an Environmental, Sustainability or Social Value project and present your business case to a panel of leaders. You will be given an opportunity to connect with a mentor to guide and support you throughout your degree. If you perform well and develop an interest in the mining industry you will be eligible for a second placement.

Joining as an Intern, you will be based in one of our corporate offices (Brisbane, Perth or Adelaide) that is closest to your home university. To broaden your experience, you and your fellow interns will spend one week at one of our mining operations where under the guidance of our experienced managers you will see how a mine site operates.  As our operations are based in regional Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales and Western Australia, you will be provided with flights, safety equipment and clothing, accommodation and meals during your time on site.

Our paid five-week program commences on the 8th of January 2024.  For you to get the most out of this experience, it is required that you are able to commit to the entire program.  Please submit your application by 11th September 2023
