Rio Tinto Closure (RTC) is the business that safely transforms Rio Tinto’s end of life mining, processing, and infrastructure assets. The RTC team collaborates with all parts of Rio Tinto across the asset life cycle to embed closure into the life of the asset; optimise closure execution; enhance Rio Tinto’s reputation and growth; and minimise long term liabilities and realise value.
RTC achieves this through collaboration with key internal partners, including Development & Technology (D&T) Projects teams - for effective development of strategy, closure planning, external stakeholder relationships (Traditional owners, local communities, and Regulatory bodies) and commercial deals, coupled with delivery of closure execution through to relinquishment of the lease.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the General Manager Closure Asia-Pacific (APAC) you will build, develop and integrate Rio Tinto Closure, Projects and functional support teams to ensure safe and efficient execution delivery and effective management of the risk profile across a complex, multi-stakeholder context.
Key accountabilities include:
- Ownership of Traditional Owner relationships and Communities and Social Performance (CSP) risk and outcomes
- Developing and delivering a closure execution strategy that maintains and preserves cost, schedule, social and environmental outcomes, including agreed remediation and cultural outcomes and commitments
- Leading and delivering across complex scenarios and decision making, including multi-stakeholder and multidiscipline challenges and opportunities
- Developing and delivering relinquishment strategy (c. 2035), including leadership of key stakeholder engagement
- Influencing, directing, and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders in a changing context
- Ensuring appropriate capability and technical skillsets are maintained, including CSP and Environment
- Facilitating engagement with regulators to progress relinquishment pathway/s and maintenance of legal compliance
- Managing and protecting ESG outcomes and business reputation during the transition and closure execution processes
What you will need for this role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
- A relevant tertiary qualification with a preferred Environmental, Social Science, CSP background and/ or engineering or project management experience
- Proficiency with Microsoft suite of software packages
- Experience with influencing business leaders
- A good understanding of the full life cycle of Mining operations within Asset Management, Geoscience, Processing or Mining or experience in a role related to performance analysis, engineering, or planning.
- Business acumen to access long reaching business value
- A thorough understanding of an asset’s postproduction life cycle
- Superior internal and external stakeholder management skills
- Significant experience in project governance processes and critical risk management
- A strong Operational and team building track record
- Experience in External Stakeholder engagement
- Experience working with small groups of highly skilled people
- Experience working to tight deadlines
- Experience working with high levels of ambiguity
- Extensive experience in large, complex organisations with either a global or large regional spread.
