About the Role

Our Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) business contains five mines, four processing hubs and two port facilities, with our Pilbara iron ore business connected by more than 1,000 kilometers of rail infrastructure. 

Join us as the General Manager - Port and lead one of the most critical operations in BHP's global network.  In this role, you'll provide visionary leadership to high-performing teams, driving strategies, systems and practices that unlock maximum value from our assets.  You'll ensure our infrastructure, equipment, and property portfolio are deployed safely, efficiently, and productively deliverying exceptional returns on investment while shaping the future of port operations at a world-class scale.

As the General Manager - Port, you will be residentially based in Port Hedland, WA. 

In this role you will also be responsible for: 

  • Maintaining a wide network of impact, integrating functions, operations and regions and solving complex challenges to drive strong functional / asset integration across BHP.
  • Coaching individuals and teams in the application of BHP Operating System (BOS) principles, practices and tools by building rapport, providing feedback and overcoming barriers to BOS implementation to support the achievement of the global BOS transformation.
  • Overseeing operational activities through leading leaders to enable the delivery of continuous safe operations.
  • Using and interpreting data from operational digital interfaces / systems / technologies to make decisions and overcome challenges in an increasingly digital work environment.
  • Anticipating and responding to external influences, recognising the scale and complexity of Port Hedland being one of the world's largest export hubs.
  • Driving continuous improvement and innovation, identifying new ways to evolve port operations and enhance productivity.
  • Overseeing a high volume of asset projects and integrating them with the existing workforce.
  • Translating corporate objectives into actionable plans, communicating, managing and analysing the implementation of those plans, and reporting back on their progress to facilitate the delivery ouf our strategy.
  • Making evidence based and strategic decisions in alignment with longer term business objectives.
  • Identifying and assessing risks, making risk informed decisions, utilising BHP's risk management framework and building a risk aware culture to support safe and productive performance outcomes.
  • Applying an understanding of the business context, BHP operating model and ways of working to enhance decision making, productivity and value chain performance.
  • Acting as a visible leader within the community, fostering strong engagement and trust, strengthening local partnerships and driving meaningful long term community outcomes.

About You

As a seasoned senior leader, you are comfortable operating at a strategic level where you consider the current and longer-term needs of your operation to ensure success, but also contributing with impact at an enterprise level where you will operate as part of one integrated team, driving alignment and delivering outstanding business results.

You bring proven expertise in managing broad and complex portfolios, including marine and port operations, supply chain integration, and coordinating across diverse internal and external stakeholders.  Your experience in matrix organisations equips you to operate seamlessly in dynamic environments, leveraging a deep understanding of the project lifecycle and value levers to deliver projects of varying size and complexity with measurable success.  You have a deep understanding of maintenance with proven experience  delivering complex shutdown cycles on time and on budget while relentlessly driving performance uplift through improved systems, processes and ways of working. 

Your leadership is grounded in genuine care and transparency, engaging with frontline teams to build strong connections and foster a culture of trust.  Safety leadership is at your core - you value nothing more than the wellbeing of the workforce. With a proven track record in leading diverse teams, you are passionate about building capability through coaching and mentoring, making a tangible difference to people and performance. 

With exceptional communication, engagement and collaboration skills, you excel at developing and sustaining relationships across all levels, as well as positively engaging with the community where you will draw on your values of integrity and respect to continually build on this vital relationship.  One of your key skills will be your ability to manage competing priorities, while remaining focused on what matters most and use your solutions focused mindset to embrace challenges and deliver outcomes that will make a difference to the company and the community. 

A tertiary qualification in Engineering or a similar qualification is required.
