Geospatial Data Scientist

Site: Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

Fortescue are looking for a Geospatial Data Scientist role to be filled at our Perth office. You will work normal business hours, Monday to Friday, being regularly based in Perth with the opportunity to occasionally visit one of our Operational sites when required to conduct training at site.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Conduct everyday business as usual (BAU) work as per the job management system or by your Lead Geospatial Data Scientist. 
  • Work with business stakeholders to educate and manage access, storage and use of spatial data and remote sensing datasets.
  • Perform image processing, image classification, change detection, machine learning and statistical analysis using Esri ArcGIS Pro, ENVI, Imagine and Google Earth Engine.
  • Prepare and maintain remote sensing products in databases, local or cloud-based filing systems and web map services using ArcGIS Enterprise and GeoCortex.
  • Work closely with other business stakeholders and co-workers to clearly communicate technical information both verbally and through procedural and report writing.
  • Assist with programming / scripting tasks in ArcGIS Pro and Google Earth Engine.
  • Data auditing and editing skills within ArcSDE SQL database to ensure exchange of updated information between sites.
  • Monitor geospatial data science technology, recommend improvements, assess and update procedures.
  • Evangelize the use of Geospatial data analytics and stimulate new ideas and concepts.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Azure fundamentals or skills in Azure Portal and Google Cloud Platform administration. 
  • Establish and uphold robust, prolific working relationships and partnerships with clients both in Perth Office and on site.
  • Adhere to the set guidelines, procedures and templates.
  • Conduct training sessions and assist co-workers with application requirements.

Qualifications and skills required:

  • To be considered for this role you will need to demonstrate your experience with data science, geospatial analysis and your remote sensing knowledge.
  • Completed BSc in GIS/Surveying/Data Science/Computer Science or equivalent.
  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS, ENVI and Google Earth Engine.
  • Solid programming and coding skills including but not limited to Python, R and Javascript. 
  • Exposure to other software i.e. FME and Geocortex would be beneficial.
  • Data processing and data capturing experience.
  • Capable of following procedures, processes and standards and identifying and recommending any improvements that may present.
  • Ability to multitask, adapt to changing requirements and timeframes.
  • Highly motivated team player is a priority.
  • Excellent written and verbal communicator who is approachable, with an enthusiastic, hardworking can-do attitude.
  • A thirst for learning new GIS skills and share those skills with others.
  • Excellent problem solving and time management skills are essential.
  • Procedural writing skills desirable.
