Geotechnical Engineer – All levels

Work Location: Perth - Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Roster: Monday to Friday

Fortescue are currently looking for people with experience in studies, design, operations, and assurance and have several roles that we are looking to fill. We have an opportunity to structure our roles to suit the strengths that candidates bring and to provide development paths for those who want to stretch themselves into other areas. 

In this position, you will draw upon your experience with mining operations, geotechnical characterization, and slope stability analysis, to provide safe and value adding direction in mining geotechnical activities. You will also be responsible for implementing best practice mining geotechnical engineering in alignment with regulatory and industry guidelines.

This is a Perth based role where you will be working alongside our team of Geotechnical Engineers. All roles will be supported by the Principal Geotechnical Engineer and the Manager of Geotechnical Engineering and Closure and will work closely with peers in our Geotechnical Assurance and Structural teams as well as stakeholders throughout the mining value chain.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ability to provide pragmatic solutions to geotechnical mining challenges
  • Lead or undertake geotechnical modelling analysis and reporting for open pits and waste rock dumps
  • Support active operations in the implementation of geotechnical designs and monitoring program definition
  • Undertake studies associated with active mining operations and sustaining development projects
  • Support geotechnical data collection and management to facilitate slope design
  • Provide technical advice and consultation with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Assess emerging global technologies in geotechnical engineering
  • Assessing and communicating geotechnical risk in slope designs
  • Support the development, implementation, and management of geotechnical design standards associated with open pit slope and waste rock dump design
  • Engage and contract manage external consultants

To be successful in this role you should have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Geotechnical or Civil Engineering, Engineering geology, or similar is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in slope stability monitoring system design, implementation and management
  • Excellent people and leadership skills
  • Excellent communication skills, with a demonstrated experience of communicating to a variety of stakeholders
  • Open pit mining experience with significant design exposure
  • Experience in a range of geological, geotechnical and hydrogeological settings and across multiple commodities
  • Excellent communication skills, with a demonstrated experience of communicating to a variety of stakeholders
  • Strong data management and manipulation skills
  • Willingness to spend short durations on site
