About the Role

The Global Principal Geoscientist – Structural Geology will be a member of the BHP Resource Center of Excellence working with our exploration, asset, and legacy asset teams worldwide.   In this role you will provide thought leadership, technical guidance, capability building and steward research & pathfinder projects that advance our ability to connect the Earth to key business decisions across the BHP value chain.  This role will support the Global Practice Lead – Integrated Geophysics.

As a trusted Advisor and Subject Matter Expert, you will have the opportunity to drive the following activities:

  • Provide leadership and guidance on the application and integration of structural geology across BHP.
  • Influence, lead and manage research and development in the integration of structural and geological modelling with geophysics, petrophysics, geotechnical engineering and hydrogeology.  You will identify key knowledge gaps collaboratively with team and peers within BHP and co-develop, maintain, and execute internal and external research roadmaps to bridge these gaps.
  • Develop and deliver training to upskill BHP geoscientists in structural geology and in their ability and confidence to integrate structure and geophysics with other disciplines across the mining value chain.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in support of technical assurance, business development, investment decisions, risk reviews and innovation initiatives.
  • Maintain an external presence, and advocate for external research in structural geology priority areas on behalf of BHP.

About You

A highly respected and globally networked professional with a reputation built upon scientific depth and breadth applied to mining and extraction including significant field experience and structural modelling expertise.

You are strategic and organized with demonstrated structural process and geomechanics knowledge. You have a passion for integrating multiple data sets and approaches to optimally impact geological, geophysical and geotechnical and hydrogeological models. With your proven ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, you will enjoy playing an integral role in influencing the research and application of structural geology, geophysics and geotechnical engineering across BHP.

In addition, to be successful in this role, you will ideally possess the following:

  • Tertiary qualification in Geoscience, Physics or Engineering. Postgraduate degree (MSc/PhD) in structural geology or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • In depth experience in application of structural geology – geoscience and engineering integration applied to mineral mining and extraction, including significant operational, field application and structural modelling
  • A deep technical understanding of fundamentals of structural geology and geological processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate multiple geoscience and engineering datasets to inform geological, exploration and geotechnical models
  • Recognised expert with relevant networks with external researchers and consultants
  • Ability to deliver training programs in the application of structural geology.
