Senior Chartering Manager

Work Location: Fortescue Centre. Fortescue’s Perth office is located on the traditional lands of the Whadjuk people.

Role overview:

This role is a senior managerial position within the shipping function and has responsibility for management of key aspects of the Chartering and Scheduling activities including responsibility for ensuring adequate freight cover for short, medium and long term vessel requirements, commercial contract structures, commercial management of towage contracts and the day to day vessel scheduling activities for vessels loading Fortescue’s product.

This role has significant interaction with Marketing via freight support to developing markets, in particular non-China markets, along with contractual terms, market information and dispute resolution.

Key responsibilities include:  

  • Accountable for negotiating chartering contracts with book value around A$2.0B per annum in a highly volatile market
  • Timing of market entry for spot vessels (30% of total volumes) can impact outcome by 10% or A$50M per annum.
  • Negotiate innovative payment structures in shipping contracts which result in cost savings of around 2.5% of contract freight spend or A$35M per annum
  • Relationship management with ship brokers, ship owners and various industry participants to target partners that meet Fortescue quality, safety and ethical standards
  • Coordinate review of Fortescue standard shipping contract terms and shipping terms in marketing sales contracts with GM Legal to protect Fortescue position and ensure compliance local and international regulations
  • Support marketing with development of new markets including India, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia where shipping contracts are a key determinant of success

Qualification and Experience:  

  • Extensive experience in the shipping industry covering multiple disciplines including commercial, operational and scheduling.
  • Shore based commercial experience with a proven track record in the shipping industry
  • Experience in managing multi-functional, diverse teams in a high-pressure environment
  • Leadership and people skills to facilitate coordination of inter department activities
  • Negotiation and strategy to deliver best commercial outcomes and long-term risk management
  • A commercial, maritime or industry related qualification is desirable but not compulsory and is considered in combination with industry experience
  • Understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks applicable to the shipping industry
