About the Role

BMA is Australia’s largest producer and supplier of searborne metallurgical coal is owned 50:50 by BHP and Mitsubishi Development.

Currently we are looking for an experienced HSE professional, to join the team as the Head of HSE – BMA where you will be accountable for ensuring effective management of Health, Safety and Environment risk and legal obligations for BMA.    

Reporting to the Asset President BMA you will be accountable for: 

  • Managing, improving and providing expertise on safety risk management practices to improve organisational safety outcomes and performance. 
  • Responding to, managing and providing specialist/functional expertise on health related risks to uplift organisational capability in health management.  
  • Designing, managing and improving environmental related controls/processes/practices to enable compliance & sustainability of our operations.  
  • Identifying, engaging and managing a range of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identifying and assessing risks, whilst making informed decisions using our risk management framework and build a risk aware culture to support safe and productive performance outcomes.  
  • Applying an understanding of the business context, BHP operating model and ways of working to enhance decision making, productivity and value chain performance.  
  • Championing continuous HSE performance and workforce capability improvement through development and delivery of industry best practices and strategic initiatives.
  • Identifying HSE insights and emerging trends to proactively focus leadership attention and shape future improvement strategies.
  • Managing efficient and effective delivery of HSE services that preserve regulatory and corporate compliance.
  • Collaborating with industry and business peers to advance identification, development, and replication of HSE best practices and initiatives.
  • Continually improve HSE professional capability through inclusive development feedback, coaching and mentoring.
  • Role model exceptional HSE leadership behaviours and practices in accordance with the BHP Charter Values. 

About you

As a HSE leader, you will have strong working experience in mining operations or in an established HSE function, with good knowledge of Queensland mining and workplace health and safety legislation.   

By nature, you thrive in a fast-paced environment and can easily work with a range of stakeholders to synthesise and analyse complex challenges to identify practical solutions across a range of areas.  Additionally, your relationship building, influencing and negotiating skills will be first class.    

You will be an experienced people leader who has demonstrated success in building and leading diverse and high performing teams to achieve outstanding business results, whilst also playing a key mentor role in your teams ongoing professional development.     

A tertiary qualification in a HSE related field, Science, Engineering or Risk Management is required.
